PORTACAVAL ANASTOMOSIS

The Lancet, 1967
Abstract The long-term results of end-to-side portacaval anastomosis in 57 patients with intrahepatic portal obstruction are reported. 30 are still alive at periods ranging from ten to fifteen years: 5 of these have or have had portal systemic encephalopathy and 5 have peptic ulceration, diabetes, or pulmonary dysfunction.

ENCEPHALOPATHY AFTER PORTACAVAL ANASTOMOSIS

The Lancet, 1968
Abstract The development of neuropsychiatric abnormalities (hepatic encephalopathy) has been investigated in relation to electroencephalographic (E.E.G.) changes in two groups of patients: 19 patients before and up to three years after end-to-side portacaval anastomosis and 19 other patients ten or more years after a portacaval shunt had been done. In

Effect of portacaval anastomosis on hypersplenism

Digestive Diseases and Sciences, 1980
Leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and hemolytic anemia occur commonly in advanced cirrhosis. Some investigators have reported that portacaval anastomosis (PCA) abolished hypersplenism while others have not found PCA to be uniformly beneficial. We compared the frequency of hypersplenism before and after admission to a controlled investigation of the effects

Brain monoamines after portacaval anastomosis

Metabolic Brain Disease, 1986
Norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin, as well as the serotonin metabolite, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, were measured in whole-brain extracts from rats with a portacaval shunt or sham operation. Norepinephrine, serotonin, and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid were significantly higher after shunting. There was no difference in dopamine.

The Development of Hemochromatosis Following Portacaval Anastomosis

Gastroenterology, 1962
Summary A case is reported of posthepatitic cirrhosis in which, for poorly understood reasons, the clinical and pathologic characteristics of hemochromatosis developed within 3 1/2 years of a portacaval anastomosis. Additional experience with 3 other cases is briefly presented.

Congenital portacaval anastomosis with cirrhosis of the liver

The American Journal of Surgery, 1958
Abstract A case of an unusual congenital portacaval anastomosis is reported. Portal cirrhosis developed in the patient and she died of hemorrhage from esophageal varices. This suggests that the existence of such a connection does not protect an individual from the development of hepatic cirrhosis.

Portacaval Anastomosis: the Longest Shunt

Hepatology, 1989
A 34–year–old patient with cryptogenic cirrhosis underwent a portacaval shunt after four episodes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. His subsequent course is remarkable not onle because of its 26–year duration, but also because of the absence of any subsequent hepatic decomensation such as jaundice, ascites, coagulopathy or ...

RIGHT THORACOABDOMINAL APPROACH FOR PORTACAVAL ANASTOMOSIS

Archives of Surgery, 1951
WHIPPLE 1 and Blakemore 2 in 1943 began to restudy the problem of the surgical approach to the distressing complications of portal cirrhosis. Eck 3 initiated the study in 1877 when he performed the first recorded successful anastomosis of the portal vein to the inferior vena cava. It remained for Blakemore, 4 Whipple 5 and later Blalock, 6 Linton 7 and

Balloon dilatation of stenotic portacaval anastomosis

Hepatology, 1981
Hemorrhage from esophageal varices is an infrequent occurrence after a portacaval anastomosis. A stenotic portacaval anastomosis resulted in persistent portal hypertension and variceal hemorrhage. Treatment by transluminal balloon dilatation of the stenotic shunt resolved the hemodynamic abnormality as demonstrated by ...

IMPAIRMENT OF LUNG FUNCTION AFTER PORTACAVAL ANASTOMOSIS

The Lancet, 1968
Abstract Three patients who had undergone the operation of portacaval anastomosis for portal hypertension are shown to have the features of a defect of gas transfer and evidence that some lung tissue is overperfused with respect to its ventilation. The findings are consistent with dilatation of the precapillary vessels of the lung.
