SPONTANEOUS CLOSURE OF THE PORTACAVAL ANASTOMOSIS IN THE EXPERIMENTAL ANIMAL
Archives of Surgery, 1950THERE has been an interest in venous fistulas since 1877, when Eck1first suggested a technic for producing a portacaval anastomosis. Since that time many studies of the physiologic changes produced in animals by an Eck fistula have been reported. Blalock,2Blakemore3and Whipple4have reported that a side to side portacaval fistula without obstruction of

Hyperplastic nodules after portacaval anastomosis in rats
Nature, 1976FOCAL proliferative or hyper-plastic regions of liver cells are readily recognised in human liver diseases1,2 and there is a possibility that some types of hyperplastic nodules are important for the development of liver cancer3. The case for the precancerous nature of hyperplastic nodules however, rests entirely on data derived from chemical hepatocar ...

USE OF PORTACAVAL ANASTOMOSIS IN PORTAL CIRRHOSIS
Archives of Surgery, 1949PORTAL cirrhosis is progressively increasing, in importance as a medical and economic problem. The rising incidence of this disease at autopsy at the Los Angeles County Hospital is indicated in table 1. The reports of Whipple, 1 Blakemore 2 and Blalock 3 on portacaval anastomosis have established the feasibility of surgical alleviation of certain of ...

Hemochromatosis associated with end-to-side portacaval anastomosis
The American Journal of Digestive Diseases, 1966Quantitative tissue iron determinations on liver are reported in a patient with Laennec's cirrhosis and bleeding esophageal varices, in whom a state pathologically indistinguishable from familial hemochromatosis developed 3 1/2 years after an end-to-side portacaval shunt. This is the first report of such measurements.

Unilateral Edema and Jaundice After Portacaval Anastomosis
Annals of Internal Medicine, 1972Abstract Unilateral edema may occur after portacaval anastomosis or other right-sided laparotomies in cirrhotic patients with ascites.

Variability in experimental results have led to criticism regarding the validity of the rat after portacaval anastomosis (PCA) as a model of changes induced by portal-systemic shunting (PSS). A nonsuture technique using cyanoacrylate glue has been reported to yield a better experimental preparation.

Massive gastrointestinal hemorrhage in the presence of portacaval anastomosis
The American Journal of Surgery, 1955Abstract 1. 1. A case is reported of severe gastrointestinal hemorrhage in a known cirrhotic patient with a successful portacaval anastomosis in whom the pressure was measured within the normal range directly at operation and later by the hepatic occluded method. 2. 2.

Effect of portacaval or mesentericocaval anastomosis on cholesterol metabolism in rats
Atherosclerosis, 1983Portacaval anastomosis (PCA) lowered by 50% the cholesterol concentration in the plasma of rats. The free and esterified cholesterol contents in the lipoproteins were decreased with the very low density lipoproteins most affected (-85%). Cholesterol concentration as total content in the liver was reduced. The major change in the cholesterol metabolism,

Progressive hypersplenism after portacaval anastomosis
The American Journal of Digestive Diseases, 1967Three patients are presented who developed severe manifestations of hypersplenism after portacaval anastomosis for cirrhosis with esophageal varices. All 3 patients ultimately required splenectomy, after which they were much improved, though a mild anemia persisted.
