Effect of Propranolol on Portal Pressure and Systemic Hemodynamics in Patients with Liver Cirrhosis and Portal Hypertension: A Prospective Study

open access: yesGut and Liver, 2007
Background/Aims: Propranolol can prevent variceal bleeding by ameliorating portal hypertension. We conducted this study to determine the effect of propranolol on portal hypertension and the optimal required dose in Korean cirrhotic patients.

Impact of Tissue Volume and Purification on Clinical Autologous Islet Transplantation for the Treatment of Chronic Pancreatitis

open access: yesCell Transplantation, 2012
Autologous islet transplantation after total pancreatectomy is an excellent treatment for painful chronic pancreatitis. Traditionally, islets have been isolated without purification; however, purification is applied when the tissue volume is large ...

Does the abiotic environment influence the distribution of flower and fruit colors?

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, EarlyView.
Abstract Premise Color in flowers and fruits carries multiple functions, from attracting animal partners (pollinators, dispersers) to mitigating environmental stress (cold, drought, UV‐B). With research historically focusing on biotic interactions as selective agents, however, it remains unclear whether abiotic stressors impact flower and fruit colors ...

A Bambusuril Receptor Binds Charge Diffuse Anions in Water at Picomolar Concentrations

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, EarlyView.
Synthesis of a bambusuril macrocycle with unprecedented binding affinity for several charge diffuse anions, including iodide, perchlorate, nitrate, and perrhenate, in neutral phosphate buffer is reported. The macrocycle exhibits selectivity for charge diffuse over charge dense anions exceeding seven orders of magnitude.

Increased Portal Pressure and Ascites in Rats Following Ligation of Portal Vein

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1949
SummaryPartial ligation of the portal vein resulted in the development of a small amount of ascites in 69%percnt; of a group of 110s rats. All rats showed an increase in portal pressure but the degree of increase did not correlate well with the amount of ascites.

Early Enzyme Replacement Therapy Does Not Prevent the Protein Losing Enteropathy Syndrome in Neurovisceral Gaucher Disease

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Medical Genetics Part A, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Gaucher disease (GD) is a rare lysosomal storage disorder characterized by multisystemic involvement. With the advent of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), patient survival has improved, revealing new long‐term complications. We report a case of a 4‐year‐old male with severe neurovisceral GD who developed protein‐losing enteropathy (PLE ...

Endoscopic ultrasound‐guided portal pressure gradient identifies patients with previously undiagnosed clinically significant portal hypertension

open access: yesPortal Hypertension & Cirrhosis
Aims Portal hypertension (PH) is a complication of cirrhosis that leads to hepatic decompensation. Assessing the portal pressure gradient (PPG) provides valuable information for disease assessment, staging, and prognosis.

PORTAL PRESSURE DECREASE AFTER ESOPHAGOGASTRIC DEVASCULARIZATION AND SPLENECTOMY IN SCHISTOSOMIASIS: LONG-TERM VARICES BEHAVIOR, REBLEEDING RATE, AND ROLE OF ENDOSCOPIC TREATMENT

open access: yesArquivos de Gastroenterologia
BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is an endemic health problem affecting about four million people. The hepatosplenic form of the disease is characterized by periportal hepatic fibrosis, pre-sinusoidal portal hypertension and splenomegaly.

Health behaviours and affective states of partners of fly‐in fly‐out workers: A daily diary study

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Social Issues, EarlyView.
Abstract Partners of fly‐in fly‐out (FIFO) workers face increases in demands, for instance in care and family responsibilities, particularly in the absence of workers; however, little is known about how their daily life experiences influence their health across the FIFO work cycle.
