SYMPATHETIC TONE MODULATES PORTAL VENOUS PRESSURE IN ALCOHOLIC CIRRHOSIS
The Lancet, 1986Sixteen alcoholic cirrhotic patients with portal hypertension were studied before and after 2.5 micrograms/kg intravenous clonidine. In six patients portal venous pressure was assessed simultaneously by wedged hepatic vein and transhepatic portal vein cannulation.

Possible equilibration of portal venous and central venous pressures during circulatory arrest
American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology, 1993The mean circulatory filling pressure technique has been used to assess total body venous tone. It involves measuring central venous pressure (CVP) at 5-8 s following circulatory arrest. This study examines if CVP and portal venous pressure (PVP) equilibrate when circulation is stopped by inflating a balloon implanted in the right atrium.

Hepatic venous catheterization is widely used to assess portal pressure. However, it remains unclear whether wedged hepatic venous pressure is a close indicator of portal venous pressure during vasoactive drug administration in nonalcoholic cirrhosis. To address this issue, we analyzed the data from our previous published studies.

To clarify the effect of splenomegaly on portal hemodynamics in patients with portal hypertension and esophageal varices, manometric studies were carried out before and after splenectomy during an operation for esophageal varices. The 118 patients evaluated retrospectively had underlying liver cirrhosis (LC) (62), idiopathic portal hypertension (IPH ...

Living Donor Liver Transplantation and Management of Portal Venous Pressure
Transplantation Proceedings, 2006Small-for-size syndrome occurs in the presence of a reduced mass of liver that is insufficient to maintain normal liver function. It has been speculated that this dysfunction is principally associated with graft exposure to excessive portal perfusion. The aim of these cases was to evaluate the efficacy of octreotide, a splanchnic vasoconstrictor, and ...

Effect of vasopressin on portal venous pressure.
Acta chirurgica Scandinavica, 1983Portal venous pressure measurements were made through percutaneous transhepatic portal vein catheterization in 29 cirrhotics with portal hypertension and in seven controls before and after intravenous vasopressin infusion in a dosage of 0.24 IU/min.

Captopril reduced portal pressure in cirrhotic patients with low portal venous velocity
Journal of Hepatology, 2002neuronal pathway is responsible for this signal transmission, or which neurotransmitter in the NTS is involved. Objectives: to clarify if 1) a capsalcin-sensitive neuronal pathway is the relaying signal between increased portal pressure and NTS activation, and 2) if local Fos expression in NTS is related to nitric oxide (NO) production.

Estimation of Portal Venous Pressure by Occlusive Hepatic Vein Catheterization
Scandinavian Journal of Clinical and Laboratory Investigation, 1953A new method recently described by Myers & Taylor for measuring portal pres- sure by occlusive catheterization of a hepatic vein was tried on (a) 10 persons showing no symptoms or signs of hepatic disease, on (b) 14 patients with chronic disease of the liver, of whom 10 had liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension syndrome and on (c) 5 patients with ...
