Effect of behavioural modification for small portions size consumption on BMI in college students of North India: a quasi experimental study

open access: yesJournal of Health, Population and Nutrition
Introduction Large meal portions contribute to the rise in Body Mass Index (BMI) leading to higher burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), especially among the youths.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Estimation accuracy of bean bags as portion size estimation aids for amorphous foods

open access: yesThe South African Journal of Clinical Nutrition
Objective: A study was undertaken to explore the portion size estimation accuracy of bean bags as low-cost volumetric portion size estimation aids for amorphous foods.Designs: Three observational, cross-sectional and three experimental/quasi-experimental

Does the visual composition of a dish influence the perception of portion size and hedonic preference?

open access: yesAppetite, 2018
We report two experiments designed to assess how the plating (i.e., visual composition) of a dish influences people's hedonic preferences and their perception of portion size.

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Piloting Citizen Science Methods to Measure Perceptions of Carbon Footprint and Energy Content of Food

open access: yesFrontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, 2020
There is a food knowledge disconnect between the food research community, and the general population. Food experts know detailed information about foods, but there is a lack of understanding about what citizens know.

The portion size effect and overconsumption – towards downsizing solutions for children and adolescents

open access: yesNutrition Bulletin, 2018
Portion sizes of foods offered to consumers have increased at the same time as overweight and obesity levels have risen. It has been suggested that large portions of high energy density (HED) foods increase total energy intake and that this is not ...

Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Literacy, Numeracy, and Portion-Size Estimation Skills [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Preventive Medicine, 2009
Portion-size estimation is an important component of weight management. Literacy and numeracy skills may be important for accurate portion-size estimation. It was hypothesized that low literacy and numeracy would be associated with decreased accuracy in portion estimation.A cross-sectional study of primary care patients was performed from July 2006 to ...

Influence of the nutrition and health information presented on food labels on portion size consumed: a systematic review

open access: yesNutrition reviews, 2018
Context In recent decades, portion sizes have increased significantly. Although previous research indicates that food labels impact on product choice and healthiness perception, their impact on portion sizes consumed is less clear.
