Congenital feline portosystemic shunts
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1986SUMMARY Five young cats with portosystemic communications, 2 with single intrahepatic and 3 with single extrahepatic portosystemic communications, were managed surgically. One cat with a ductus venosus was treated successfully by surgery. Ptyalism and behavioral changes were similar in all 5 cats.

TRANSJUGULAR INTRAHEPATIC PORTOSYSTEMIC SHUNTS
Annual Review of Medicine, 1995▪ Abstract Management of bleeding esophageal varices due to portal hypertension has traditionally relied on endoscopic sclerotherapy and operative intervention with placement of a portosystemic shunt. Although percutaneous decompression of portal hypertension was investigated 25 years ago, it was not clinically feasible until recently.

Portosystemic myelopathy: Spastic paraparesis after portosystemic shunting
Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology, 2006Portosystemic encephalopathy (PSE) is a well-known, common complication of portal hypertension. It is thought to be caused by nitrogenous substances such as ammonia, which are normally cleared from the blood stream by the liver. In cirrhosis and other hepatic disorders with portosystemic shunting (PSS)-- either surgical portosystemic anastomoses (PSA ...

Digestive Diseases, 2005The transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is an interventional treatment resulting in decompression of the portal system by creation of a side-to-side portosystemic anastomosis. Since its introduction 16 years ago, more than 1,000 publications have appeared demonstrating broad acceptance and increasing clinical use.

Intrahepatic Congenital Portosystemic Shunts
Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal PracticePatients with a single congenital portosystemic shunt (PSS) often fail to thrive and routinely experience episodes of hepatic encephalopathy. Although medical therapy may mitigate clinical signs, shunt attenuation improves long-term outcomes and allows for improved liver function.

WHICH PORTOSYSTEMIC SHUNT IS BEST?
Gastroenterology Clinics of North America, 1992No single shunt operation is ideal for all patients or all circumstances. The selective distal splenorenal shunt is preferred for the majority of patients, because it has the potential to preserve hepatic portal perfusion. Most evidence suggests that the distal splenorenal shunt is followed by a lower frequency of encephalopathy than is any type of ...

Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS)
Gastroenterology Nursing, 1998A transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a recently developed radiologic technique that is useful in the treatment of complications of portal hypertension, variceal bleeding, and ascites.
