Assessment of a Social Media‐Based Method for Determining Raptor Diet

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 6, June 2025.
This study mined social media as a citizen science method to reduce the time burden and biases associated with recording accurate diet information for predators. In total, 1985 prey observations were recorded of two Australian coastal raptors and were used to produce diet profiles that were compared by region, social media platform, and against other ...

Crustaceans as Key Prey: Insights Into the Dietary Partitioning of Four Carnivorous Fishes in the Nansha Islands, South China Sea

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 6, June 2025.
This study, through a combination of morphological analysis, molecular identification, and stable isotope analysis, confirmed that crustaceans are the primary food source for these fishes. Small carnivorous fishes reduce niche overlap by selectively feeding on different types of crustaceans—a strategy supported by the abundant crustacean resources in ...

Age and growth of Callinectes danae (Brachyura: Portunidae) in a tropical region [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Crustacean Biology, 2012
Some 2178 male and 2109 female Callinectes danae Smith, 1869 were caught in Northeastern Brazil, from March 2009 through February 2010; we reared 24 males and 24 females for 6 months. The relative growth (relation between weight and cephalothorax width) showed negative allometry, except in adult males.

The value of conditional prediction: Can retained species help predict unknown discards in commercial fisheries?

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 6, Page 1392-1405, June 2025.
Due to their higher performance and reliability, we consider SSDMs valuable for modelling unobserved discards and advise caution when using conditional joint prediction for continuous response variables such as biomass, especially when overdispersion is likely.

Brachyura (Crustacea, Decapoda) associated to Schizoporella unicornis (Bryozoa, Gymnolaemata) in Ubatuba bay (SP), Brazil

open access: yesBrazilian Archives of Biology and Technology, 1998
This work characterizes the composition of Brachyura from Schizoporella unicornis. The samples were collected in 1995 at Itaguá Beach, Ubatuba (SP), at three month intervals, during all seasons from January to December. The Bryozoa colonies were obtained

Wait a Minute? Hiding Behavior of Burrowing Crabs and an Oversized Bill Explain Why Crab Plovers Prefer Armored Swimming Crabs

open access: yesEthology, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2025.
ABSTRACT In the Indo‐West Pacific biogeographical region, a suite of shorebirds searches for crabs as food. While the majority of these shorebirds hunt on burrowing crabs, the endemic crab plover Dromas ardeola additionally feeds on swimming crabs with “fast and powerful claws”.

First record of the association between Lychnorhiza lucerna (Scyphozoa, Rhizostomeae) and Cyrtograpsus affinis (Decapoda, Varunidae) Primer registro de la asociación entre Lychnorhiza lucerna (Scyphozoa, Rhizostomeae) y Cyrtograpsus affinis (Decapoda, Varunidae)

open access: yesLatin American Journal of Aquatic Research, 2012
We report the association between the jellyfish Lychnorhiza lucerna and the crab Cyrtograpsus affinis. Numerous examples of associations between medusae and brachyurans have been observed in the field and noted in the literature.
