Local Context Matters: Site‐Dependent Functional and Ecological Responses to Woody Encroachment

open access: yesJournal of Vegetation Science, Volume 37, Issue 3, May/June 2026.
We analysed the effects of woody encroachment on plant functional traits, functional diversity indices and ecological and disturbance indicator values in sub‐Mediterranean calcareous grasslands of the northern Iberian Peninsula. Higher woody cover was associated with shifts in community functional strategies and indicator values, as well as with ...

Influence of surface roughness spatial variability and temporal dynamics on the retrieval of soil moisture from SAR observations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Radar-based surface soil moisture retrieval has been subject of intense research during the last decades. However, several difficulties hamper the operational estimation of soil moisture based on currently available spaceborne sensors.

Neural Information Processing and Time‐Series Prediction with Only Two Dynamical Memristors

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, Volume 12, Issue 7, 6 April 2026.
The present study demonstrates how simple circuits with only two memristive devices are utilized to perform high complexity temporal information processing tasks, like neural spike detection in noisy environment, or time‐series prediction. This circuit simplicity is enabled by the dynamical complexity of the memristive devices, i.e.

Generalized Additive Model With Dynamic Coefficients for Spatiotemporal Ozone Predictions

open access: yesEnvironmetrics, Volume 37, Issue 3, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Accurate prediction of surface‐level ozone concentrations is critical for air quality management and public health protection. This study develops a flexible spatiotemporal statistical modeling framework to predict daily mean O3 concentrations across Italy by integrating satellite‐derived ozone estimates with ground‐based observations and high‐

First Measurements of Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity From Peats of the Central Congo Basin

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 40, Issue 4, April 2026.
We show that saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) in surficial peats of central Congo Basin is low compared to deeper peat layers elsewhere in the tropics. Low Ksat in Congolese peats may be a result of low rainfall compared to other tropical peat forming regions, leading to deeper dry‐season water tables and more rapid decomposition.

Concrete Classification and Centralizers of Certain $\mathbb{Z}^2 \rtimes {\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$-actions

open access: yes, 2012
We introduce a new class of actions of the group $\G$ on finite von Neumann algebras and call them twisted Bernoulli shift actions. We classify these actions up to conjugacy and give an explicit description of their centralizers. We also distinguish many

Criticism of the Poverty of the Stimulus Argument (POSA)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Language and Culture Studies, 2023
This paper intends to provide information about the Poverty of the Stimulus Argument (POSA) by presenting different viewpoints. At the outset a brief history of Nativism was provided, and then linguistic nativism and empiricism were elaborated on. Afterward, Plato’s ideas will be argued for and against and then Plato’s problem will be discussed in ...

Harnessing nature‐based solutions in modified tropical peatland to benefit biodiversity

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 4, April 2026.
Our findings demonstrate that well‐designed protection–production NbS schemes in tropical peat swamps can deliver joint climate and biodiversity benefits, provided that governance safeguards core forests while improving habitat quality in production zones.

The Passive Optical Sample Assembly (POSA) on STS-1 [PDF]

open access: yes
The passive optical sample assembly (POSA) hardware, scheduled for the flight on orbital flight test 1 is described. The function of the instrument is aid in the assessment contamination hazards to sensitive payloads in the shuttle cargo bay. It consists
