Holonomic -modules and positive characteristic

open access: yesJapanese Journal of Mathematics, 2009
This article is based on the 5th Takagi Lectures delivered at the University of Tokyo in 2008. We discuss a hypothetical correspondence between holonomic D-modules on an algebraic variety X defined over a field of zero characteristic, and certain families of Lagrangian subvarieties in the cotangent bundle to X.

Harnessing the Orientation of Columnar Discotic Liquid Crystals for Narrowband Blue Emission with Enhanced Out‐Coupling Efficiency Toward Improvement of SP‐OLEDs Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Solution‐processed OLEDs containing discotic liquid‐crystalline MR‐TADF emitters are reported. Supramolecular self‐assembly induces homeotropic columnar alignment, enforcing preferential horizontal orientation of the emitter transition dipole moment in spin‐coated films, which leads to an enhancement in the device light outcoupling efficiency while ...

Junctional force patterning drives both positional order and planar polarity in the auditory epithelia

open access: yesNature Communications
Tissue function depends on the precise organisation of the constituent cells. In the cochlea, the fidelity of hearing depends on mechanosensory hair cells being consistently surrounded by supporting cells.

Measured Rogue Waves and Their Environment

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2020
We conduct a comprehensive analysis of over 350 years of accumulated ocean surface elevation time series and examine evidence for the effects of nonlinear frequency modulation, wave directional spread, surface current shear, and wind forcing on the ...

Discovery of a high state AM CVn binary in the Galactic Bulge Survey [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We report on the discovery of a hydrogen-deficient compact binary (CXOGBS J175107.6-294037) belonging to the AM CVn class in the Galactic Bulge Survey.

Geometrically Tunable Scaffold‐Free Muscle Bioconstructs for Treating Volumetric Muscle Loss

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Volumetric muscle loss is associated with traumatic muscle resulting in permanent functional impairment. Mold‐based, scaffold‐free, high‐density muscle tissue bioconstructs are developed in customizable geometric shapes and sizes. The transplanted rectangular solid‐shaped muscle bioconstructs improved muscle force recovery and tissue regeneration in ...

Splay Nematic Phase

open access: yesPhysical Review X, 2018
Different liquid crystalline phases with long-range orientational but not positional order, so-called nematic phases, are scarce. New nematic phases are rarely discovered, and such an event inevitably generates much interest.

Nanoparticles as Versatile Tools for Mechanotransduction in Tissues and Organoids

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology, 2020
Organoids are 3D multicellular constructs that rely on self-organized cell differentiation, patterning and morphogenesis to recapitulate key features of the form and function of tissues and organs of interest.

Phase behaviour of colloidal assemblies on 2D corrugated substrates

open access: yes, 2012
We investigate - with Monte Carlo computer simulations - the phase behaviour of dimeric colloidal molecules on periodic substrates with square symmetry. The molecules are formed in a two-dimensional suspension of like charged colloids subject to periodic

Nuclear position modulates long-range chromatin interactions

open access: yesPLOS Genetics, 2022
The human genome is non-randomly organized within the cell nucleus. Spatial mapping of genome folding by biochemical methods and imaging has revealed extensive variation in locus interaction frequencies between cells in a population and between homologs within an individual cell.
