Impact of Sustainable Binders Based on Lignin and Collagen on the Volume Stability and Mechanical Properties of MgO‐C Refractories with MgO‐C Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Collagen hydrolysate is evaluated as a sustainable binder for MgO‐C refractories. Its thermally induced cross‐linking and gas release lead to expansion and cracking in large bricks, but tailored batches with lignin, recyclates, or fine graphite improve the gas release while thermal treatment and stability.

The Energy Costs of Historic Preservation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We explore the impact of historical preservation policies on domestic energy consumption. Using panel data for England from 2006 to 2013 and employing a fixed effects strategy, we document that (i) rising national energy prices induce an increase in home

Towards a Positive Energy District

open access: yes, 2022
Urban neighborhoods that work toward carbon-free, climate-neutral goals, attain a positive energy balance, and aspire for excess renewable energy production are defined as Positive Energy Districts (PEDs). PEDs are designed to contribute to sustainable urban growth, and it is also true that sustainable urban growth can lead to the creation of PEDs ...

Development of Sustainable MgO–C Refractories Using MgO–C Recyclates and a Novel Eco‐Friendly Fructose–Tannin Binder Crosslinked With Citric Acid

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study develops sustainable MgO–C refractories using recycled materials and eco‐friendly fructose–tannin binders. The enhanced performance of citric acid as a cross‐linker and functional additives on mechanical and thermomechanical properties was examined. Characterization included strength tests, immersion trials, and microstructural and inclusion

Integrating Digital Twins and Positive Energy Districts: A Framework for Scalable Urban Energy Transformation [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences
Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) offer a path to urban climate neutrality but present significant management complexity. Digital Twins (DTs), dynamic virtual replicas, provide powerful tools for monitoring, simulation, and control needed for PEDs.

Dairy Cow Ownership and Child Nutritional Status in Kenya [PDF]

open access: yes
This study examines the hypothesis that dairy cow ownership improves child nutritional status. Using household data from coastal and highland Kenya, three econometric model formulations are estimated. Positive impacts on chronic malnutrition are observed

Unraveling the Effect of Tramp Elements on Phase Transformations in Steels by Combining CALPHAD Modeling and Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates how tramp elements from increased scrap usage influence phase transformations in low‐alloyed steel. Combining dilatometry and microscopy reveal that tramp elements delay transformations, reduce critical cooling rates and increase hardenability.
