Frozen Sections for Positive Margins?

European Urology, 2006
Radical prostatectomy, or probably more accurately termed total prostatectomy, is one of the most common approaches for the treatment of clinically, organ-confined prostate cancer. Whether performed by an open (retropubic or perineal) or laparoscopic technique, perioperative morbidity has dramatically declined over the past two decades.

Positive Marginality: Antecedents and Consequences

Journal of Adult Development, 1998
This article presents evidence for the view that an important precursor to a feminist identity is a sense of one's own marginality plus a redefinition of what that marginality means. Choosing marginality appears to be a highly adaptive strategy for social activists who can “pass” as members of the dominant majority.

Positive Margins After Oncoplastic Surgery for Breast Cancer

Annals of Surgical Oncology, 2015
Oncoplastic techniques applied to breast-conserving surgery (BCS) allow large-volume resections without compromising cosmetic results. Level II oncoplastic techniques are based on mammoplasties. When required, they allow resection of more than 20 % of the breast volume; however, a subgroup of these patients will still have positive margins.

Recurrent Basal Cell Carcinoma in Margin-positive Tumors

Annals of Plastic Surgery, 1997
The purpose of this investigation was (1) to determine the incidence of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) recurrence in patients who had microscopic evidence of residual tumor at the margin of resection and (2) to identify morphological characteristics that predispose to recurrence.

Significance of Positive Nodes and Positive Margins

1991
Approximately 30% of patients with prostatic malignancy clinically confined to the organ of origin by rectal examination or by ultrasound examination have extension of malignancy to the regional pelvic lymph nodes. Involvement of the regional pelvic nodes is felt to reflect extension of the malignancy from the primary organ of origin and to identify ...

Association of Radial Margin Positivity With Colon Cancer

JAMA Surgery, 2015
In colon cancer, radial margin positivity (RMP) is defined as primary disease involvement at the cut edge of the mesentery or nonserosalized portions of the colon. Although extensively studied for rectal malignancies, RMP has unclear prognostic implications for tumors of the colon. To determine the effect of RMP on perioperative outcomes as well as ...

Impact of positive surgical margins after radical prostatectomy

p s s s T m m w a o adical prostatectomy provides excellent longterm survival for patients with clinically loalized prostate cancer. A significant number of atients, however, will ultimately have disease reurrence after surgery.1 Biochemical recurrence oes not ultimately guarantee significant metastatic isease and/or death, but for the vast majority of

Positive surgical margins in cancer of the larynx

European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, 2001
In order to determine what should be done for laryngeal cancer patients when surgical margins are positive, and to evaluate their prognosis, a retrospective review of 21 laryngeal cancer patients with positive surgical margins out of 714 surgically treated cases (2.9%) was carried out. Nineteen patients were treated with postoperative radiation therapy.

Understanding the mechanisms creating false positive lumpectomy margins

The American Journal of Surgery, 2005
All breast surgeons deal with the frustration of initial pathologic close or positive margins that have no residual cancer upon re-excision. To understand the mechanisms that create false positive margins, specimen handling was standardized in a single surgeon's practice and margin issues were tracked.Prospectively over a 3.5-year period, needle ...
