Possibility theory and independence

1995
We study the links between uncertainty and the notion of dependence. We investigate three possible definitions of dependence that are constructed from possibility measures. One of them has been proposed be Zadeh, and the two others are based on the notion of conditional possibility.

Possibility Theory vs. Probability Theory

1985
Since L. Zadeh proposed the concept of a fuzzy set in 1965 the relationships between probability theory and possibility theory have been discussed. Both theories seem to be similar in the sense that they both are concerned with some type of uncertainty and both use the [0,1] interval for their measures as the range of their respective functions.

Physical Theories and Possible Worlds

1988
Formalized physical theories are not, as a rule, stated in intensional languages. Yet in talking about them we often treat them as if they were. We say for instance: ‘Consider what would happen if instead of p’s being true q were. In such a case r would be likely.’ If we say this sort of thing p, q and r appear to stand for the meanings of sentences of

Is Design Theory Possible?

2008
Because design is a practice, a theory of design is not possible in the same sense as a theory of chemistry is. Socio-psychological theories of what designers do are not design theories. Knowledge of how to design cannot be reduced to theory, for reasons that grow out of the philosophy of science.

Conditioning in possibility theory

1978 IEEE Conference on Decision and Control including the 17th Symposium on Adaptive Processes, 1978
This note is concerned with the study of the concept of conditional possibility distributions. The intuitive notion of possibility is presented as a set-function which is a special case of a precapacity. This set-function is extended to linguistic variables using general formulation of optimization under elastic constraints.

Theory of the possible

2021
In this book, we are talking about a single principle that permeates every organized entity, regardless of what sphere it belongs to. Everywhere and always, and in accordance with the current circumstances, the process of formation, support and regulation of any complex complexes and ensembles is guided and controlled by the concept of the realizable ...

The Possibilities of Theory

1998
Abstract As a political subject, we would expect sexual governance to be part of the estab lished body of political philosophy. Yet there exists only a small amount of serious explicit political analysis of heterosexuality. Given that sex matters and that all so;..

Introduction to Possibility Theory

2019
The major difficulty faced by systems supporting decision-making is due to the fact that we have to deal with imperfect decision-relevant information. At this level, we have to admit a basic assumption that human knowledge, reasoning, and exchanged evidences and information are intrinsically, for the most part, characterized and expressed by a degree ...

CONDITIONAL INDEPENDENCE RELATIONS IN POSSIBILITY THEORY

International Journal of Uncertainty, Fuzziness and Knowledge-Based Systems, 2000
The goal of this paper is to survey and briefly discuss various rules of conditioning proposed in the framework of possibility theory, as well as various conditional independence relations suggested for these rules. These conditioning rules and conditional independence relations are confronted with formal properties of conditional independence ...
