Concept, Tests, and Optimum Design of Novel Negative Stiffness Friction Dampers for Seismic Protection of Long‐Span Bridges

open access: yesEarthquake Engineering &Structural Dynamics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Viscous dampers (VDs) are widely used to mitigate the excessive responses of long‐span bridges. However, VDs face some intricate challenges in engineering practices, including high damping coefficient requirement, potential base shear amplification and tremendous damping force under high velocity. To address these issues, this study develops a

On the post-buckling of elastic beams on gradient foundation

open access: yesComptes Rendus. Mécanique, 2011
The post-buckling of an axially loaded elastic beam resting on linearly elastic medium is investigated in this paper from a geometrically exact analysis. It is known that the elastic foundation increases the bifurcation limit, but it may have a destabilizing effect on the post-buckling behavior associated to imperfection sensitivity.

Applied Element Modelling of Out‐Of‐Plane Instability in Boundary Elements of Thin RC Walls

open access: yesEarthquake Engineering &Structural Dynamics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Recent earthquakes in Chile (2010) and New Zealand (2011) caused extensive damage to buildings featuring reinforced concrete (RC) structural walls, with observed failure modes including out‐of‐plane instability of slender walls. This buckling‐type response under combined in‐plane and out‐of‐plane loading has also been documented in ...

Design by analysis of ductile failure and buckling in torispherical pressure vessel heads

open access: yes, 2007
Thin shell torispherical pressure vessel heads are known to exhibit complex elastic-plastic deformation and buckling behaviour under static pressure. In pressure vessel Design by Analysis, the designer is required to assess both of these behaviour modes ...

Effect of Ammonium Polyphosphate/Silicate Content on the Postfire Mechanics of Epoxy Glass‐Fiber Composites Using Facile Chocolate Bar‐Inspired Structures

open access: yesFire and Materials, Volume 49, Issue 3, Page 329-346, April 2025.
ABSTRACT This study investigates the postfire mechanical properties of epoxy glass‐fiber reinforced composites (EP GFRCs) using increasing concentrations of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and inorganic silicate (InSi) to modify the char and fire residue.

New design tools for lightweight aerospace structures

open access: yes, 2004
This paper presents two new design tools for lightweight aerospace structures. The first tool is the Tailored Fibre Placement (TFP) design tool TACO. It is used to optimize the fibre orientations of structures made of Carbon Fibre Reinforcement Plastics (

Programmable crack dynamics engineering enables flexible strain sensors with high linearity

open access: yesFlexMat, EarlyView.
First‐decoupling theoretical framework of crack evolution elucidating the control methods, mechanistic insights, and structure‐activity relationships is established. Crack propagation from uncontrollable randomness systematically evolves into spatially ordered states.
