Investigation on hard‐rock breaking performance and auxiliary mechanism of picks assisted with both‐sided high‐pressure water jets

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This paper investigates the high‐pressure water jet‐pick combined rock‐breaking mode (HPC), which employs high‐pressure water jets to precut grooves on both sides of the picks. The rock‐breaking patterns and performance of the HPC method are obtained, and the auxiliary rock‐breaking mechanism of water jet grooving is revealed.

Slip versus dilation tendency parameter space as a tool for prospecting structurally controlled geothermal systems in greenfield: insights from the greater Ruhr region

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study highlights that with the static and time‐dependent evolution of slip versus dilation tendency parameter space, structurally controlled deep geothermal systems can be selected within areas of higher permeability and lower seismic hazard. Abstract Faults play a vital role in the Earth's hydraulic system by facilitating fluid flow when dilating

Post-Earthquake Night-Time Light Piecewise (PNLP) Pattern Based on NPP/VIIRS Night-Time Light Data: A Case Study of the 2015 Nepal Earthquake

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2020
Earthquakes are unpredictable and potentially destructive natural disasters that take a long time to recover from. Monitoring post-earthquake human activity (HA) is of great significance to recovery and reconstruction work.

Seismic vulnerability assessment of clustered historical centers: fragility curves based on local collapse mechanisms analyses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
open5noProtection and preservation of minor historical centres against earthquakes effects are not trivial tasks, particularly in the cases, quite common, of complex aggregate buildings.

An assessment of stress and production rate of sucker rod heat pipes in oil well pumping system

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The sucker rod pumping system is the preferred oil extraction technique. The concept about equipping the hollow vacuum space in solid sucker rods with heat pipe has been scrutinized in terms of stress and oil production evaluation. Abstract The implementation of the heat pipe concept in sucker rods for oil pumping systems negates the requirement for an

Cascaded framework for earthquake building damage detection combining spatial and frequency domain feature integration [PDF]

open access: yesThe International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences
Building collapse is a major cause of casualties after an earthquake, so accurately extracting building damage information is critical for post-earthquake assessment and rescue.

Stones and Bones: Catholic Responses to the 1812 Collapse of the Mission Church of Capistrano [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This essay delves into the 1812 collapse of the Great Stone Church at California’s Mission of San Juan Capistrano and its aftermath to consider how early modern Catholics in the greater Iberian world approached the material remains of ruined churches ...

Critical expansion points: Mechanical signs of surrounding rock instability

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study proposes the Rock Bearing‐Expansion Model (RockBEM) with critical expansion points (CEPs) to quantify post‐peak damage stages in deep‐buried rock masses via plane strain compression test (PSCT). CEP hysteresis&interval ratios reveal bearing performance dynamics and failure severity, advancing mechanistic insights into deep underground rock ...

A Growth–Survival Trade‐Off Along an Elevation Gradient Is Altered by Earthquake Disturbance in a Monodominant Southern Beech Forest

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Tree growth–survival relationships link two demographic processes that individually dictate the composition, structure and functioning of forest ecosystems.
