Post hoc rationalism in science

Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 2011
AbstractIn advocating Bayesian Enlightenment as a solution to Bayesian Fundamentalism, Jones & Love (J&L) rule out a broader critique of rationalist approaches to cognition. However, Bayesian Fundamentalism is merely one example of the more general phenomenon of Rationalist Fundamentalism: the tendency to characterize human judgments as ...

Post hoc power analysis.

Journal of Applied Psychology, 1994
The objective of a post hoc review of statistical power is to determine the average power of tests used in a particular field. Because most theories in psychology are not sufficiently advanced to provide an exact prediction of effect size, post hoc reviews invariably calculate the power of a test in terms of the test's ability to detect the expected ...

Post-hoc $α$ Hypothesis Testing and the Post-hoc $p$-value

2023
An unfortunate feature of traditional hypothesis testing is the necessity to pre-specify a significance level $α$ to bound the size of the test: its probability to falsely reject the hypothesis. Indeed, a data-dependent selection of $α$ would generally distort the size, possibly making it larger than the selected level $α$.

Post hoc decision to use a covariate

Journal of Chronic Diseases, 1977
Abstract A computer simulation of ten thousand experiments showed that some methods of deciding between analysis of variance and analysis of covariance may distort the significance level. These results show that it is more desirable either to always use a logical covariate or to make this decision based on the significance of the slope of the ...

Post hoc procedures for planning and evaluation

Evaluation and Program Planning, 1979
Abstract A model designed to isolate, in post hoc fashion, current program services is presented. Concepts from multidimensional scaling are united with program planning techniques to yield an approach which allows for the specification of the five basic dimensions of program (Clients, Problems, Services, Professionals, and Facilities). These five
