Up to one third of the patients consult a doctor because of abdominal complaints within 1 year after the operation. In addition, a higher incidence of colon carcinoma after cholecystectomy has been reported in female patients.

1) The patients with gall bladder disease, both medical and surgical cases, had a slight disturbance in fat absorption. 2) Of the two, postcholecystectomy group showed lesser disturbance than cholecystopathy patients under medical treatment.

Postcholecystectomy syndrome and its association with ampullary stenosis
The American Journal of Surgery, 1980Fifty-six consecutive patients returning with recurrent or persistent upper abdominal pain after cholecystectomy were studied by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, abdominal ultrasound and morphine neostigmine test. In 44 patients, pain recurred within 6 months after cholecystectomy.
