The literature is reviewed regarding estimation of the postmortem interval (PMI) by chemical analysis of cadaver fluids. The most useful measurements on blood and CSF are amino nitrogen, nonprotein nitrogen, ammonia, creatine, and inorganic phosphate; these have some value in the early PMI.
