Wireless Acousto‐Piezoelectric Conduit with Aligned Nanofibers for Neural Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
An ultrasound‐driven, highly aligned piezoelectric nanofiber‐based nerve guidance conduit (APNF‐NGC) designed for effective peripheral nerve repair has been demonstrated in this study. Featuring aligned topology, cell‐adhesive surfaces, and an axial electric field, the APNF‐NGC collectively promotes significant nerve regeneration.

Association of preoperative systemic corticosteroid therapy with surgical outcomes in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients

open access: yesAnnals of Thoracic Medicine, 2019
BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients are at an increased risk of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the risks and benefits associated with preoperative steroids in COPD ...

Crohn's disease activity index and Vienna classification - Is it worthwhile to calculate before surgery? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Background: Crohn's disease (CD) patients with increased disease activity may reveal an increased risk for perioperative complications. The `Crohn's disease activity index' (CDAI) and the `Vienna classification' (VC) were developed for standardized ...

Micro‐Strain Responsive Near‐Infrared Mechanoluminescence for Potential Nondestructive Artificial Joint Stress Imaging

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
In situ and real‐time stress sensing during total knee replacement procedure is expected to be realized based on near‐infrared mechanoluminescent phosphor of Sr3Sn1.98Sb0.02O6.99, which has the lowest strain sensitivity as low as 50 µst. Abstract Recently, joint replacement surgery is facing significant challenges of patient dissatisfaction and the ...

Risk Factors of Intraoperative Dysglycemia in Elderly Surgical Patients [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
BACKGROUNDː Dysglycemia is associated with adverse outcome including increased morbidity and mortality in surgical patients. Acute insulin resistance due to the surgical stress response is seen as a major cause of so-called stress hyperglycemia. However,

Zinc‐Coordinated Trienzyme Nanogel Cascade Therapy for Accelerated Post‐Pancreatectomy Cutaneous Wound Healing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A zinc‐coordinated nanogel assembly is reported that co‐delivers three enzymes to regulate glucose, oxidative stress, and oxygen levels. This system mimics natural enzyme cascades to reprogram the wound environment after pancreatectomy. In a post‐pancreatectomy mouse model, it accelerates healing by reducing infection, promoting blood vessel growth ...

POSTOPERATIVE LUNG COMPLICATIONS [PDF]

open access: yesJAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1922
Scientific investigation and clinical experience agree in demonstrating that the causes which underlie the production of postoperative lung complications are manifold, and the best means of obviating them is still a desideratum. Clinical reports indicate that lung complications most frequently follow abdominal operations, especially stomach ...
