Calcitonin gene‐related peptide concentration in cerebrospinal fluid and serum in horses affected by trigeminal‐mediated headshaking

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Trigeminal‐mediated headshaking (TMHS) in horses shares clinical features with human trigeminal neuralgia (HTN). Increased levels of the neuropeptide calcitonin gene‐related peptide (CGRP) have been found in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of HTN patients. Inhibition of CGRP in humans has shown promise for pain relief.

The Role of Anesthetic Techniques and Drugs in Laparotomy Cases of Postoperative Ileus

open access: yesMagna Medika
Background: Ileus occurs when there is a non-mechanical decrease or stoppage of the flow of intestinal contents. The cause of ileus has yet to be clearly defined. Various factors influence the risk for an ileus, each affecting a small part of the complex

Oral rehydration solution for the management of fluid and electrolyte disturbances in patients with an ileostomy: A scoping review

open access: yesJournal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, EarlyView.
Abstract Ileostomy creation is common among patients with colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Surgical removal or diversion of the colon can result in nutrition complications, most notably dehydration—a leading cause of hospital readmission—and increased risk of kidney injury.

Robotic‐Assisted Versus Laparoscopic‐Assisted Colectomy: Findings on Short‐Term Outcomes From A Multi‐Institutional Propensity Score‐Matched Study

open access: yesThe Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The present study compared the short‐term outcomes and perioperative complications of robotic‐assisted colectomy (RAC) and laparoscopic‐assisted colectomy (LAC) in patients with colon cancer. This retrospective study included patients with histologically confirmed colon adenocarcinoma who underwent either RAC or LAC at five medical centers in ...

Total postoperative opioid dose is an independent risk factor for prolonged postoperative ileus after laparoscopic colorectal surgery: a case-control study [PDF]

open access: yesKorean Journal of Anesthesiology
Background Prolonged postoperative ileus (PPOI) is a major complication of colorectal surgery. Increased opioid consumption has been proposed to increase the risk of PPOI.

Evaluation of long‐term postoperative morbidity and survival after equine colic surgery using a complication severity classification

open access: yesVeterinary Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Most studies on colic surgery outcome focus on short‐term survival and complications. Long‐term outcomes, particularly post‐discharge morbidity, are poorly characterised despite their relevance. No standardised system has previously integrated both short‐ and long‐term postoperative complications with survival outcomes.

A totally laparoscopic associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy assisted with radiofrequency (radiofrequency assisted liver partition with portal vein ligation) for staged liver resection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In order to induce liver hypertrophy to enable liver resection in patients with a small future liver remnant, various methods have been proposed in addition to portal vein embolisation.
