Four cases of POI during a period of 15 years (1987-2001) were analysed retrospectively. Symptoms developed after a median period of 2.5 days following the operation. Idiopathic Postoperative Intussusception

During the last 11 years idiopathic postoperative intussusception developed in ten children. The incidence was 5.5% of all the intussusceptions. The age ranged from three months to ten years and the interval between two surgical procedures differed from three to eight days. Only one of the patients presented the classical signs of intussusception.

Intussusception occurs most commonly between the fifth and ninth month of life. Affected infants are usually healthy and born at full gestation age. We describe a case of intussusception occurring in a 10-day-old, 700-g neonate born at 28 weeks' gestation. The diagnosis was made at laparotomy 7 days after colostomy for imperforate anus.

The authors present diagnosis and treatment of two children with postoperative intussusception. A 6-month baby with retroperitoneal teratoma developed clinical signs of intestinal obstruction in 2 days after surgery. The child underwent redo laparotomy, and ileocecal intussusception was found.
