Postural balance is a complex mechanism that is an enigma to most individuals. This column examines the biomechanics of posture and balance, looks at postural balance across the life span, and identifies conditions or situations that interfere with balance. Prevention measures are also discussed.

Modelling of the biomechanics of posture and balance
Journal of Biomechanics, 1990A technique for studying the relationship of posture to balance has been developed. To investigate this relationship quantitatively, the human body was treated as consisting of 11 rigid body segments, each with six degrees of freedom. A bilateral Selspot II/TRACK data acquisition system provides position and orientation kinematic data for estimation of

Balance prostheses for postural control
IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine, 2003There is a clear need for a prosthesis that improves postural stability in the balance impaired. Such a device would be used as a temporary aid during recovery from ablative inner-ear surgery and as a permanent prosthesis for those elderly prone to falls.

Development of postural balance in foals
The Veterinary Journal, 2013This study used stabilographic analysis to measure and describe changes in stability during standing in foals from birth to 5 months of age. Stabilographic analysis was performed on newborn foals immediately after first suckling then daily until 1 week of age, weekly until 1 month of age and monthly until 5 months of age.

Changes in posture and balance with age
Aging Clinical and Experimental Research, 1992Changes in posture with age are of concern because of their association with impaired mobility and the possibility of falls. In this study alignment of the joint centers and balance of body segments were measured in 41 women, aged 65 and older, and correlated with weight, age, change in height, and activity.

Postural strategy to keep balance on the seesaw
Gait & Posture, 2006This work investigates the kinematic and electromyography (EMG) strategy used by the central nervous system (CNS) to keep equilibrium during anterior-posterior balance on seesaws with different degrees of instability. The movement of hip, knee, and ankle were reconstructed using a 3D motion-analysis system and the EMG activities of selected ankle, knee,

Impaired Postural Balance in Turner Syndrome
Hormone and Metabolic Research, 2013An impaired body balance has been found in Turner syndrome (TS) in clinical tests like Rombergs's test and walking on a balance beam. The aim of the study was to assess postural balance in TS subjects with specific balance testing using dynamic posturography and relate to body composition. Nineteen TS subjects (20-57 years) were included.

Force platform for postural balance analysis
2012 11th International Conference on Information Science, Signal Processing and their Applications (ISSPA), 2012In clinical practice, postural stability is commonly evaluated by scored balance performance of body sway on a platform. In this work, a platform with reaction force measurement is realized for postural balance analysis. A Microsystems based on microcontroller was built in order to drive the instrumentation and a graphical user interface has also ...

SWAY - Designing for Balance and Posture Awareness
Proceedings of the Twelfth International Conference on Tangible, Embedded, and Embodied Interaction, 2018This paper presents the SWAY prototype that encourages people to explore aspects around balance and posture in a playful way. The prototype senses small movements and shifts in posture using a Kinect sensor, and translates these movements to the tilting of a platform holding a set of marbles, and to haptic feedback in the form of vibrations.

Postural balance measurements for children and adolescents
Journal of Orthopaedic Research, 1998AbstractMeasurements of standing balance were determined for 92 children and adolescents, 5–18 years old, while they stood on a force plate with eyes open or eyes closed. The measurements included center‐of‐pressure calculations for path length per second, average radial displacement, anterior‐posterior and me‐diolateral amplitudes, area per second ...
