ABSTRACT We develop a unified mathematical framework extending classical moment theory from discrete integer orders to a continuous spectrum of real orders f>0$$ f>0 $$, providing a systematic statistical characterization of complex systems exhibiting power‐law behavior.

Simply-connected vortex-patch shallow-water quasi-equilibria
This work is supported by a UK Natural Environment Research Council studentshipWe examine the form, properties, stability and evolution of simply-connected vortex-patch relative quasi-equilibria in the single-layer ƒ-plane shallow-water model of ...

Predicting wind turbine blade loads using vorticity transport and RANS methodologies [PDF]
Two computational methods, one based on the solution of the vorticity transport equation, and a second based on the solution of the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations, have been used to simulate the aerodynamic performance of a horizontal axis ...

Polar‐low track prediction using machine‐learning methods
Machine‐learning models are developed to produce reliable and efficient forecasts of polar‐low (PL) trajectories 12 hours ahead. A temporal model (RLSTM) benefiting from the rolling‐forecast strategy, improves overall prediction accuracy and is suitable for quick experimentation, while a spatiotemporal model (PL‐UNet), incorporating both historical and

Gyrofluid potential vorticity equation and turbulent equipartion states:Paper [PDF]
An equation governing potential vorticity in a magnetized plasmas is derived. The equation is analogous to Ertel's theorem. In the long wave-length limit the potential vorticity equals the ratio of the gyro-frequency plus the E × B- and diamagnetic ...

How consistently do ensemble prediction systems represent the growth of atmospheric uncertainty?
Spread‐based diagnostics calculated for 12 ensemble prediction systems are compared to understand the consistency with which they represent atmospheric uncertainty growth. Good correlation between all these systems is found in the extratropics for a lead time range from 48 hr to between 96 hr and 192 hr.

‘Preferred Trajectories’ defined by mass and potential vorticity conservation
La mayoría de los métodos para estimar velocidades geostróficas "absolutas", en ausencia de mediciones directas de velocidad, utilizan restricciones que definen la dirección del flujo a diferentes niveles verticales.

In this study, the synoptic conditions for modes of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) in South Korea are generalized based on composite analysis. The preferred precipitation region, synoptic patterns, moisture transport, sea surface temperature and thermodynamic and dynamic instabilities are characterized according to four modes: convective cells (CC)

Convective inhibition beneath an upper-level PV anomaly
Copyright @ 2008 Royal Meteorological SocietyUpper-level potential-vorticity (PV) anomalies reduce the convective stability of the troposphere through their impact on the vertical potential-temperature profile, thus reducing convective inhibition (CIN ...
