Recombinant anticoccidial vaccines - a cup half full? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Eimeria species parasites can cause the disease coccidiosis, most notably in chickens. The occurrence of coccidiosis is currently controlled through a combination of good husbandry, chemoprophylaxis and/or live parasite vaccination; however, scalable ...

Understanding the interactions between Eimeria infection and gut microbiota, towards the control of chicken coccidiosis: a review

open access: yesParasite, 2021
The gastrointestinal tract in poultry harbours a diverse microbial community that serves a crucial role in digestion and protection. Disruption of the gut environment due to Eimeria spp.

Responses of Coccidia-Vaccinated Broilers to Essential Oil Blends Supplementation up to Forty-Nine Days of Age [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Coccidiosis control may become a greater problem as the use of growth-promoting antibiotics (GPA) and ionophores declines. Vaccination with live oocysts may turn into a popular alternative to the use of coccidiostats in broilers, although cocci ...

Alfalfa‐Based Dehydrated Silage Pellet as a Source of Nutrients in Laying Hens: I. Effects on Animal Performance and Egg Quality

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 2, March 2026.
Alfalfa‐based silage pellets (ABSP) showed significant results regarding production performance, yolk colour and ω‐3 (PUFAs), as well as the ratio ω‐6/ω‐3 (p < 0.05). The ABSP group also exhibited a higher abundance of beneficial bacteria and a lower abundance of pathogenic bacteria compared to the control group (p < 0.05).

Practices, Management and Resource Preferences of Backyard (Hobby) Poultry Owners in Central North Carolina: A Qualitative Study

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 2, March 2026.
Backyard, or hobby, poultry owners in central North Carolina primarily viewed their flocks as pets, and reported self‐sufficiency in managing flock health with support from online social networks. Zoonotic disease prevention and biosecurity education that appeals to the pet‐owner mindset should be further explored for use in backyard poultry settings ...

Immunological control of coccidiosis in poultry

open access: yesSURG Journal, 2010
Coccidiosis – caused by parasites of the genus Eimeria – is an infection known to damage poultry. Eimeria spp. follow a typical coccidian lifestyle consisting of an endogenous asexual and sexual phase and an exogenous infectious phase. Eimeria spp.

Effect of Probiotic and Synbiotic Supplementation on Growth Performance, Serum Parameters and Gut Histomorphometry in Broiler Chickens Challenged With Eimeria

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 12, Issue 2, March 2026.
This study assessed probiotic and synbiotic supplementation via drinking water in Eimeria challenged broilers. In a 2×3 factorial design with 360 Cobb 500 chickens, Eimeria impaired growth, FCR and gut morphology, while probiotics and synbiotics improved performance, intestinal structure and serum biochemistry, alleviating coccidiosis induced damage ...

Toltrazuril-Loaded Polymeric Nanocapsules as a Promising Approach for the Preventive Control of Coccidiosis in Poultry

open access: yesPharmaceutics, 2022
Coccidiosis is a disease caused by intracellular protozoan parasites of the genus Eimeria that affect the intestinal tract of poultry. However, strain resistance and drug residue in the carcass have drawn the attention of the productive sector.
