Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Vibration-Suppression Efficacy in Spring Pendulum Pounding-Tuned Mass Damper

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Originally proposed by the authors, the spring pendulum pounding-tuned mass damper (SPPTMD)—a novel nonlinear damping system comprising a spring pendulum (SP) and motion limiter that dissipates energy through spring resonance amplification and controlled

Multi-Hazard Vibration Control of Transmission Infrastructure: A Pounding Tuned Mass Damper Approach with Lifelong Reliability Analysis

open access: yesBuildings
Power transmission tower-line systems are exposed to various dynamic hazards, including wind and earthquakes, among others. Despite the multitude of dampers proposed to mitigate vibrations, the dual control effect on both seismic and wind-induced ...

Seismic Vibration Mitigation of a Cable-Stayed Bridge with Asymmetric Pounding Tuned Mass Damper [PDF]

open access: yesMathematical Problems in Engineering, 2021
In order to mitigate the seismic response of a cable-stayed bridge, a new type damping device named asymmetric pounding tuned mass damper (APTMD) is developed in this paper on the basis of the traditional symmetric pounding tuned mass damper. The novel APTMD has three parameters to be determined: the left-side gap, the right-side gap, and the frequency

Vibration Attenuation in a High-Rise Hybrid-Timber Building: A Comparative Study

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
Recent developments in engineered timber products, and their availability, durability, and renewability, have led to taller and more flexible buildings. However, these buildings may experience excessive vibrations, resulting in safety and serviceability ...

Reduction of Vibrations in Long‐Span Continuous Girder Bridges with Pounding Tuned Mass Dampers

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2022
Earthquakes often cause bridges to vibrate to different degrees; moreover, in the case of poor road conditions, the vibration amplitude of bridges caused by vehicles often exceeds a reasonable range, thus causing different degrees of damage to bridges.

An analytical frequency‐domain model of aerodynamic mass and damping of floating wind turbines

open access: yesWind Energy, Volume 26, Issue 11, Page 1140-1164, November 2023., 2023
Abstract The fore‐aft motion of the rotor‐nacelle assembly (RNA) of a rotating floating wind turbine (FWT) can cause an oscillation in aerodynamic thrust, which may be equivalently treated as frequency‐dependent aerodynamic mass and damping effects. In this study, an explicit frequency‐domain analytical model is proposed to calculate the equivalent ...

Study on Methods to Control Interstory Deflections

open access: yesGeosciences, 2020
One of the possibilities to prevent building pounding between two adjacent structures is to consider appropriate in-between separation distance. Another approach might be focused on controlling the relative displacements during seismic excitations ...

Study on Seismic Performance of TID-LRB Hybrid Control System under Multi-Level Earthquakes

open access: yesBuildings, 2022
The seismic response characteristics of a lead-rubber-bearing(LRB) base-isolated structure under rare and very rare earthquakes were investigated. The acceleration, ductility coefficient, and shear strain of the LRB increase significantly under very rare

Thermal insulation versus capacitance: A simulation experiment comparing effects of shade and hyporheic exchange on daily and seasonal stream temperature cycles

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 37, Issue 9, September 2023., 2023
We use a novel stream heat‐budget model incorporating advection and storage of heat in the hyporheic zone to compare the effects of riparian shade versus hyporheic exchange on stream temperatures and heat budgets. Shade is akin to ‘thermal insulation’ on the channel—reducing heat‐gain via solar radiation and preventing heat‐loss via longwave radiation.
