Atom Probe Tomography as an Emerging Tool for Understanding Defect‑Driven Mechanisms in HfO2‑Based Ferroelectrics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This Perspective highlights atom probe tomography as a powerful tool for understanding the atomic‐scale defect chemistry in HfO2‐based ferroelectrics. 3D mapping of dopants, point defects, and interface chemistry can provide new insight into defect‐driven mechanisms underpinning the ferroelectricity in the system and guide the design of more reliable ...

Two Coexisting Pathways to Volatility in Valence‐Change Memory Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Volatile VCM‐type memristive devices exhibit current relaxation after resistive switching, but their microscopic origin remains debated. Using pulsed measurements and a new Tunnel‐DLTS approach on Pt/SrTiO3/Nb:SrTiO3 devices, we show that post‐SET volatility is predominantly ionic, while electronic contributions—arising from quasi‐Fermi‐level ...

Sulfur‐Free Ultrahigh‐Refractive‐Index Polymers Enabled by Densely Packed Oxygen‐Bridged Dibenzofuran‐Cardo Architectures

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A new class of sulfur‐free, oxygen‐bridged dibenzofuran‐based polymers is developed for ultrahigh‐refractive‐index applications. The rigid π‐extended architecture and enhanced molecular polarizability enable exceptional optical performance, combining refractive indices up to 1.848 with high Abbe numbers and full visible transparency. This work offers a

Beam power in the synchrotron radiation

open access: yes, 1976
The design of electron storage rings for the NSLS which have the potential of very high power outputs in the radiation beams is discussed. The power density in the X-ray beam of the large ring at 2.5 GeV, 500 ma is so large that special care must be taken with cooling to avoid melting the aluminum at critical regions. Aluminum alloys lose nearly all of

Binary‐to‐Ternary Reconfigurable Transistors Using Plasma‐Assisted MoS2

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A binary‐to‐ternary reconfigurable transistor is demonstrated using a dual‐gated molybdenum disulfide homojunction with localized O2 plasma treatment. The device exhibits on/intermediate and intermediate/off current ratios of 102 and 104, respectively, and the intermediate state is electrically tunable in the ternary mode.

Disentangling Bulk and Surface Contributions to Charge and Discharge Fading in High‐Voltage LiCoO2

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
High‐voltage operation of LiCoO2 accelerates capacity fading through bulk and surface degradation. By introducing a LiTaO3 coating to selectively suppress surface degradation, bulk and surface contributions to charge and discharge fading are decoupled.

System requirements for laser power beaming to geosynchronous satellites

open access: yes, 1994
Geosynchronous satellites use solar arrays as their primary source of electrical power. During earth eclipse, which occurs 90 times each year, the satellites are powered by batteries, but the heavy charge-discharge cycle decreases their life expectancy ...

Orbital Analysis, Microwave Power Beaming and Semiconductor Material Damage Assessment for Space-Based-Solar Systems

open access: yes
Technological advancements must keep pace with the earth’s rising demand for energy, while minimizing the carbon footprint on earth. One such option is using space based solar (SBS) energy harvesting and radiofrequency (RF) microwave power beaming.
