Influence of harmonics on power distribution system protection

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1988
The effects of nonsinusoidal voltages and currents on the performance of static underfrequency and overcurrent relays are experimentally studied. The tests were conducted in such a way that the frequency, amplitude and phase shift of individual harmonics could be adjusted in a controlled manner by using a waveform generator with a phase-locking circuit.

Power distribution system equipment overvoltage protection

IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 1994
Application of surge overvoltage protection devices in general is based upon rule of thumb without the benefit of understanding basic parameters, system components and configuration, and energy content of the surge. This may result in the selection of an inadequate device.

Impact of distributed generation on protection of power system

2017 International Conference on Innovative Mechanisms for Industry Applications (ICIMIA), 2017
Day by day demand of Electricity is increasing so, in order to fulfill this demand we need to increase generation of power. Because of this increasing demand, non-renewable energy sources are on the verge of extinction so the solution is to use renewable energy sources. One such solution is to connect DG having renewable energy sources in power system.

Computerized control and protection of electric power distribution system

The IEEE Computer Society's Second International Computer Software and Applications Conference, 1978. COMPSAC '78., 2005
The U.S. utilities have traditionally pioneered the use of computer technology to optimize its operation and to reduce its cost. With the recent development of microprocessors, present R&D efforts are focused or, applying this technology and companion communication technologies to the control and protection of the transmission and distribution network ...

Power distribution protection scheme enhanced with communication

2009 IEEE PES/IAS Conference on Sustainable Alternative Energy (SAE), 2009
The paper proposes a communication-based protection scheme for distribution networks with distributed generators. Emphasis is put on making the scheme flexible for various network configurations. Extensive simulation studies demonstrate the proper operation of the protection scheme.

Power Management and Protection of Distribution Systems with Distributed Generations

2017
Future electric distribution systems will deploy an increasing number of distributed generations (DG), with a large portion being renewable generations and some being fossil-fueled generations. There will be a rising number of microgrids that can operate in both grid-connected and off-grid mode.

Towards a formal model of protection functions for power distribution networks

IECON 2016 - 42nd Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 2016
The protection system is a crucial part of the power grid. It protects people, equipment, and property. Reliability of such mission critical systems is of an extreme importance. Protection systems have strict requirements to reliability including dependability, security and timeliness. Although it undertakes rigorous testing and commissioning, it fails

Distributed power control for secondary spectrum trading with incumbent protection

2013 IEEE 24th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC Workshops), 2013
Spectrum trading allows incumbents of spectrum to increase their profit margins by selling portions of unused spectrum to secondary systems. While being a spectrally efficient process; interference from secondary usage degrades the performance of the incumbent network.

Networking communication for power monitoring, protection and control of mill power distribution

Annual Technical Conference on Pulp and Paper Industry, 2002
The authors describe the use of local area networks to monitor, protect, and control a paper mill. The following aspects are considered: types of equipment that can be monitored and information that is transmitted and recorded; installations in paper mill applications; hardware that is added to form a local area network; and how the information is ...

Lightning protection of overhead power distribution lines

IEEJ Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 2007
AbstractThere are two major protective methods against lightning outages on overhead distribution lines. One is by use of surge arresters and the other is by an overhead ground wire. Surge arresters have rather constant effect regardless of the type of lightning outage causes.
