Blackout scare underlines industry dilemma [power generation reliability]
Power Engineer, 2005Gas imports, fossil fuel, nuclear and wind - can we rely on any of these to keep the lights on? This article discusses the fact that all sources of electricity, whether nuclear, fossil fuel or renewable are fallible and none can be relied upon 100%. It is precisely for this reason that many countries, including the UK, have developed electrical grid ...

Research On Reliability Of Power Grid With Distributed Generation
2018 China International Conference on Electricity Distribution (CICED), 2018First, the reliability theory of distribution network is introduced and the reliability model of single component of distribution system is established. Then, the distribution function of wind generation and PV are established by using probability theory and uncertainty modeling method.

Distributed generation impact on reliability and power quality indices
2002 Rural Electric Power Conference. Papers Presented at the 46th Annual Conference (Cat. No. 02CH37360), 2003Properly sited distributed generation (DG) can increase the feeder capacity limit, but this does not necessarily produce an improvement in system reliability or power quality, as quantified by standard indices. The DG may have a positive impact on reliability through faster system restoration following a fault.

On the Computation of Power-Generating System Reliability Indexes
Technometrics, 1984Reliability models play an important role in the determination of the required generation reserves of a given electric power utility company and of its expected operating cost. Specifically, these models are used to compute the risk of system load loss and the capacity utilization ratios of different units comprising the system.

Power System Reliability Analysis with Distributed Generators
2014Reliability is a key aspect of power system design and planning. In this research we present a reliability analysis algorithm for large scale, radially operated (with respect to substation), reconfigurable, electrical distribution systems. The algorithm takes into account equipment power handling constraints and converges in a matter of seconds on ...

Generation reliability modeling and analysis of wind power plants
2004The reliability impact of wind generation is evaluated using a set of reliability modeling and analysis tools implemented with MATLAB. As expected, the addition of wind generation increases the reliability of a power system. However, the extent to which the reliability is increase varies with the wind farm's penetration level.

Distributed Generation: A Tool for Power Reliability and Quality
Distributed Generation & Alternative Energy Journal, 1999Distributed generation technologies are entering a changing NorthAmerican utility landscape that is being shaped on one side of the meterby restructuring and on the other by increasing customer demand forhigher-quality, more reliable power . Whatever form restructuring takes,it will likely provide opportunities for more companies, including endusers ...
