Voting power and voting blocs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
We investigate the applicability of voting power indices, in particular the Penrose index (aka absolute Banzhaf index), in the analysis of voting blocs by means of a hypothetical voting body.

Comparative Evaluation of Hemodiafiltration, Hemoperfusion, and Standard Hemodialysis on Efficacy, Inflammatory Control, Dialysis Adequacy, and Safety in End‐Stage Renal Disease: A Prospective Observational Study

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Chronic micro‐inflammation in patients with end‐stage renal disease (ESRD) is a significant driver of cardiovascular complications and diminished quality of life. While standard hemodialysis (SHD) effectively manages small‐molecule clearance, its ability to remove medium‐to‐large uremic toxins—the primary catalysts of systemic ...

Comparative study of line voltage stability indices for voltage collapse forecasting in power transmission system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
At present, the evaluation of voltage stability assessment experiences sizeable anxiety in the safe operation of power systems. This is due to the complications of a strain power system.

Prime Power Indices in Factorised Groups [PDF]

open access: yesMediterranean Journal of Mathematics, 2017
Let the group $G = AB$ be the product of the subgroups $A$ and $B$. We determine some structural properties of $G$ when the $p$-elements in $A\cup B$ have prime power indices in $G$, for some prime $p$. More generally, we also consider the case that all prime power order elements in $A\cup B$ have prime power indices in $G$. In particular, when $G = A =

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Three-dimensional power Doppler indices of ovarian stromal blood flow and serum vascular endothelial growth factor after laparoscopic ovarian drilling in women with polycystic ovary syndrome

open access: yesMiddle East Fertility Society Journal, 2015
Objective: To evaluate the effects of laparoscopic ovarian drilling (LOD) on three-dimensional (3D) power Doppler indices of ovarian stromal blood flow and serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome ...
