We analyzed the effects of dopamine signaling on the temporal organization of rest and activity in Drosophila melanogaster. Locomotor behaviors were recorded using a video-monitoring system, and the amounts of movements were quantified by using an image ...

Power-law citation distributions are not scale-free [PDF]
We analyze time evolution of statistical distributions of citations to scientific papers published in one year. While these distributions can be fitted by a power-law dependence we find that they are nonstationary and the exponent of the power law fit decreases with time and does not come to saturation.

Numerical Simulation of Intensity Fluctuations in Random Laser Systems [PDF]
The spectral behavior of a random lasing system (TiO2 powder dispersed in Rhodamine 6 G dye solution) is calculated using numerical calculations. The total integrated intensity is calculated for different incident optical intensities, particle densities,

Derivation of 2D Power-Law Velocity Distribution Using Entropy Theory
The one-dimensional (1D) power law velocity distribution, commonly used for computing velocities in open channel flow, has been derived empirically. However, a multitude of problems, such as scour around bridge piers, cutoffs and diversions, pollutant ...

Microcanonical foundation for systems with power-law distributions [PDF]
Starting from microcanonical basis with the principle of equal a priori probability, it is found that, besides ordinary Boltzmann-Gibbs theory with the exponential distribution, a theory describing systems with power-law distributions can also be derived.

An Empirical Study of the Effect of Power Law Distribution on the Interpretation of OO Metrics
Context. Software metrics are surrogates of software quality. Software metrics can be used to find possible problems or chances for improvements in software quality. However, software metrics are numbers that are not easy to interpret.

Power-law distribution of family names in Japanese societies [PDF]
We study the frequency distribution of family names. From a common data base, we count the number of people who share the same family name. This is the size of the family. We find that (i) the total number of different family names in a society scales as

Background Though earlier works on modelling transcript abundance from vertebrates to lower eukaroytes have specifically singled out the Zip’s law, the observed distributions often deviate from a single power-law slope.

Limit order placement as an utility maximization problem and the origin of power law distribution of limit order prices [PDF]
.I consider the problem of the optimal limit order price of a financial asset in the framework of the maximization of the utility function of the investor.
