Preprocessing Procedure for Propagation Measurements on MEO Satellite Links

open access: yesInternational Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper presents a software tool designed for preprocessing data from an experimental campaign aimed at characterizing the tropospheric propagation channel using Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellites. The collected data provide critical insights into the channel in scenarios involving continuous variations in azimuth and elevation, along with

Elevator dynamic monitoring and early warning system based on machine learning algorithm

open access: yesIET Networks, EarlyView., 2022
In order to monitor and warn the elevator dynamics, in this work, the machine learning algorithm is introduced, and the particle swarm algorithm is used to perfect the model. The model is optimised, and the experimental comparison shows that the optimisation of the model parameters can further improve the accuracy of the elevator load prediction. Then,

Integrated LEO Constellation and In‐Cabin Distribution System for Continuous Aircraft 5G Connectivity

open access: yesInternational Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The integration of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations with commercial aircraft communication systems presents critical challenges in maintaining continuous connectivity during dynamic flight conditions. Current geostationary satellite systems suffer from high round‐trip latency (>$$ > $$ 500 ms) and inadequate coverage at high ...

Electrification, Power Outages and Employment

open access: yesApplied Economics and Finance, 2020
Although electrification rates have increased in developing countries, the poor quality of electricity still remains a challenge. This paper studies the effects of electrification at the intensive margin, using a fixed effects approach. I find that power outages significantly reduce employment, earnings, and hours of work.

Insights From the Alphasat Aldo Paraboni Experiment at Tito Scalo and Spino d'Adda: Characterizing Scintillation and Rain Attenuation at Ka‐ and Q‐Band Frequencies

open access: yesInternational Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We present experimental results on the relationship between rain attenuation and simultaneous scintillation during rain events, based on beacon signal measurements at 19.7 (Ka‐band) and 39.4 GHz (Q‐band) from the geosynchronous Alphasat satellite (25° E), received at two Italian ground stations, Spino d'Adda (42.1° slant path) and Tito Scalo ...

Synergistic Use of Nighttime Satellite Data, Electric Utility Infrastructure, and Ambient Population to Improve Power Outage Detections in Urban Areas

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2017
Natural and anthropogenic hazards are frequently responsible for disaster events, leading to damaged physical infrastructure, which can result in loss of electrical power for affected locations. Remotely-sensed, nighttime satellite imagery from the Suomi

Dynamic Cell Division for Interference Management in Satellite Direct‐to‐Cell Systems

open access: yesInternational Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Direct‐to‐cell (D2C) connectivity enables future non‐terrestrial networks to provide service directly to standard terrestrial user equipment (UE) when terrestrial networks (TN) are unavailable. In this work, the satellite system is considered as a secondary network that supplements existing TN coverage while minimizing interference to the ...
