Analyses of unexplained faults in transmission lines in the power grid of Ethiopia

open access: yesElectric Power Systems Research
Ethiopian power transmission lines operating at 132 kV, 230 kV and 400 kV are encountering unacceptably high number of unexplained outages caused by external factors, which compromise the reliability of the system.

Incipient fault detection in mechanical power transmission systems

Proceedings of the 2005, American Control Conference, 2005., 2005
This paper presents a novel method for anomaly detection in a helical gear box, where the objective is to predict incipient faults before they become catastrophic. The anomaly detection algorithm relies on symbolic time series analysis and is built upon concepts from automata theory, information theory, and pattern recognition.

A novel fault features extraction scheme for power transmission line fault diagnosis

IEEE Africon '11, 2011
This paper proposes a novel transmission line fault detection and classification scheme, based on a single-end measurements using time shift invariant property of a sinusoidal waveform. Various types of faults at different locations, fault resistance and fault inception angles on a 400 kV – 361.65 km power system transmission line are investigated. The

Fault detection at power transmission lines by extreme learning machine

2013 21st Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference (SIU), 2013
With the increase of energy demand continuous energy transmission gained considerable attention. For a continuous energy transmission, the faulty power transmission line needs to be quickly isolated from the system. In this study, Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) possessing fast learning and high generalization capacity was used for this purpose and it ...

Fault analysis of HTS power transmission cables

2013 IEEE International Conference on Applied Superconductivity and Electromagnetic Devices, 2013
It is very attractive to replace traditional power cables into high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables for electricity transmission to metropolitan areas with the advantages of high capacity and low losses. However, these advantages only present when the conductors are kept in certain low temperature.

Fault Detection Method Using ANN for Power Transmission Line

2020 10th IEEE International Conference on Control System, Computing and Engineering (ICCSCE), 2020
Electric power transmission line is an important medium to supply the electric power continuously. However, the exposed environment of transmission line leads to the presence of faults. Therefore, this paper presented a method to overcome the problem in order to improve the quality of power system.

Fault diagnosis in transmission networks of linear and nonlinear power systems

2009 European Control Conference (ECC), 2009
A scheme for on line fault detection in a power system is introduced in this paper. The scheme is based on the use of a sliding mode observer where an appropriate set of output measurements is utilized to detect the onset of faults in the transmission network of the power system in real time and on-line.

Detecting fault type and fault location in power transmission lines by extreme learning machines

2015 23nd Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference (SIU), 2015
Importance of supplying qualified and undisturbed electricity is increasing day by day. Therefore, detecting fault, fault type and fault location is a major issue in power transmission system in order to prevent power delivery system security. In previous studies, we observed that faults can be easily determined by extreme learning machine (ELM) and ...

Fault diagnosis system for tapped power transmission lines

Electric Power Systems Research, 2010
Abstract This paper presents a design for a fault diagnosis system (FDS) for tapped HV/EHV power transmission lines. These lines have two different protection zones. The proposed approach reduces the cost and the complexity of the FDS for these types of lines. The FDS consists basically of fifteen artificial neural networks (ANNs).

Enhancing Fault Location Performance on Power Transmission Lines

2007 IEEE Lausanne Power Tech, 2007
This paper discusses supporting algorithms for fault location on power transmission lines. The performance of fault location algorithm is strongly dependent on the accuracy of line model. Short circuit recordings contain valuable data, from which line parameters can be computed.
