Speech acts, discourse structure, and pragmatic connectives
Journal of Pragmatics, 1984Abstract This paper demonstrates the need to reconsider the study of speech acts in a hierarchical model of discourse structure, integrating dialogal and monologal discourse. It emphasizes the decisive role of pragmatic connectives in the linking between discourse constituents at different levels.

If she is merely thinking aloud about what she ought to do, then she has not invoked that right.
