Society and Theory, 2013이 글은 사회 이론에서 프래그머티즘적 전환을 소개한다. 프래그머티즘은 19세기 말 퍼스, 제임스, 듀이 등의 미국 철학자들에 의해서 근대 철학을 지배해온 데카르트, 흄, 칸트 등으로부터 물려받은 철학적 문제들에 대한 비판으로부터 출발했다. 20세기 후반 프래그머티즘은 철학뿐 아니라 사회사상, 법, 문화이론, 인지과학 등 다양한 영역에서 부활하고 있다. 프래그머티즘은 존재론적으로 인간을 정신과 육체로 구분하고 이에 따라 생각과 행위를 구분하는 철학을 거부하면서, 인간을 삶의 과정에서 발생하는 실천적 문제들을 해결해 나가는 존재로 본다.
