Prairie wetlands may be important sites of mercury (Hg) methylation resulting in elevated methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in water, sediments and biota. Invertebrates are an important food resource and may act as an indicator of MeHg exposure to higher organisms. In 2007-2008, invertebrates were collected from wetland ponds in central Saskatchewan,

Spring Nutrient Levels in Drained Wetlands of IOWA’s Prairie Pothole Region
Wetlands, 2017Approximately 95% of nearly 4 million acres of wetlands located in Iowa’s portion of the Prairie Pothole Region (Des Moines Landform Region) are currently drained and farmed for row crop agriculture. Many of these wetland basins are too wet to produce consistent crop yields and too dry to function as normal wetlands.

A test of vegetation-related indicators of wetland quality in the prairie pothole region
Journal of Aquatic Ecosystem Health, 1996This study was part of an effort by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to quantitatively assess the environmental quality or “health” of wetland resources on regional and national scales. During a two-year pilot study, we tested selected indicators of wetland quality in the U.S. portion of the prairie pothole region (PPR).

Three Responses of Wetland Conditions to Climatic Extremes in the Prairie Pothole Region
Wetlands, 2016Wetlands in central North Dakota were revisited after 50 years to assess changes following extreme drought and a prolonged wet period. We compared data collected during 1961–1966 to current (2013–2014) wetland conditions. We revisited 80 wetlands in 2013 and 2014 across three study areas and measured wetland area, ponded-water depth, and specific ...

Additionality in Conservation Easements Programs: Grassland Easements in the Prairie Pothole Region
2014Conversion of native sod (grassland) to cropland in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) is threatening important breeding habitats for migratory birds. About 50 percent of North American ducks are produced in the grasslands of the PPR, even though this habitat accounts for only ten percent of duck breeding territory.
