Event-based analysis of wetland hydrologic response in the Prairie Pothole Region

Journal of Hydrology, 2022
Abstract Previous studies in the Prairie Pothole Region mainly assessed wetland hydrologic function at seasonal, annual and decadal scales. While many studies have looked at water balance dynamics and local flow generation processes in wetlands, no study looked at hydrological dynamics in response to individual rainfall events in prairie pothole ...

Vegetation changes over time in Prairie Pothole Region reference wetlands

Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, 2023
Periodic assessments of reference condition wetlands are needed to determine changes over time; however, they are rarely conducted. The vegetation from past assessments, 1998 to 2004, was compared to 2016 assessments of 12 reference wetlands in the Missouri Coteau sub-ecoregion of the Prairie Pothole Region using nonmetric multidimensional scaling and ...

Spatial Modeling of Wetland Condition in the U.S. Prairie Pothole Region

Biometrics, 2002
We propose a spatial modeling framework for wetland data produced from a remote-sensing-based waterfowl habitat survey conducted in the U.S. Prairie Pothole Region (PPR). The data produced from this survey consist of the area containing water on many thousands of wetland basins (i.e., prairie potholes).

Economics of Grassland Conversion to Cropland in the Prairie Pothole Region

Conservation Biology, 2010
Abstract:  Much of the remaining grassland, particularly in North America, is privately owned, and its conversion to cultivated cropland is largely driven by economics. An understanding of why landowners convert grassland to cropland could facilitate more effective design of grassland‐conservation programs.

Topographic analysis for the prairie pothole region of Western Canada

Hydrological Processes, 2012
AbstractThe unique topography of the pothole region of the North American prairies creates challenges for properly determining basin contributing area. Numerous depressions or potholes within the landscape impound runoff. However, potholes can ‘fill‐spill’ resulting in surface water connections between the potholes.

Conservation Reserve Program enrollment decisions in the Prairie Pothole Region

Journal of Soil and Water Conservation, 2018
The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) has retained support from farmers and the conservation community for three decades. Beneficial to farmers, the program is voluntary, does not require a permanent easement or the transfer of property rights, and provides fixed income and other financial support. However, high and volatile commodity prices in recent

Modelling surface‐water depression storage in a Prairie Pothole Region

Hydrological Processes, 2018
AbstractIn this study, the Precipitation‐Runoff Modelling System (PRMS) was used to simulate changes in surface‐water depression storage in the 1,126‐km2Upper Pipestem Creek basin located within the Prairie Pothole Region of North Dakota, USA. The Prairie Pothole Region is characterized by millions of small water bodies (or surface‐water depressions ...

Characteristics of recently restored wetlands in the prairie pothole region

Wetlands, 1996
Between 1987 and 1991, 1892 prairie potholes were restored in northern Iowa, southern Minnesota, and southeastern South Dakota by state and federal agencies, most as part of the Conservation Reserve Program. The total area covered by these restored wetlands is approximately 2714 ha.
