The functional significance of mantis peering behaviour
The aim of this review is to explain the functional significance of mantis peering behaviour from an entomological perspective. First the morphological and optical features of the mantis compound eye that are important for spatial vision are described ...

Antennal development in the praying mantis (Tenodera aridifolia) highlights multitudinous processes in hemimetabolous insect species. [PDF]
Insects possess antennae equipped with a large number of segments (flagellomeres) on which sensory organs (sensilla) are located. Hemimetabolous insects grow by molting until they reach adulthood.

The study presents biodegradable and recyclable mixed‐matrix membranes (MMMs), hydrogels, and cryogels using luminescent nanoscale metal‐organic frameworks (nMOFs) and biopolymers. These bio‐nMOF‐MMMs combine europium‐based nMOFs as probes for the status of the materials with the biopolymers agar and gelatine and present alternatives to conventional ...

Controlled syntheses of lanthanide coordination polymers based on the dihydroxybenzoquinone (DHBQ) organic linker afforded large single crystals of Ln‐DHBQ CPs (Ln = Yb, Nd). A novel structural variant of Yb‐DHBQ is identified by means of single crystal diffraction analysis.

Motion-in-depth perception and prey capture in the praying mantis Sphodromantis lineola: DATA
Data and plotting scripts supporting the paper "Motion-in-depth perception and prey capture in the praying mantis Sphodromantis lineola". The data are from experiments that investigated the role of binocular and monocular cues to motion in depth ...

Fast‐Responding O2 Gas Sensor Based on Luminescent Europium Metal‐Organic Frameworks (MOF‐76)
Luminescent MOF‐76 materials based on Eu(III) and mixed Eu(III)/Y(III) show rapid and reversible changes in emission intensity in response to O2 with very short response times. The effect is based on triplet quenching of the linker ligands that act as photosensitizers. Average emission lifetimes of a few milliseconds turn out to be mostly unaffected by

Differential Spectral Adaptation in Praying Mantises
Abstract Praying mantises often display elaborate camouflage, disappearing into the shapes, textures, and colors around them. But they have largely been thought to be monochromats, unable to perceive the colors they mimic.

Metal‐modified beta zeolite has long been recognized as an important catalyst for reactions involving acid and bifunctional catalysis. The gas‐phase conversion of glycerol over Zr‐beta (prepared by a mechanochemical approach) demonstrated the remarkable versatility of this catalytic system, evidenced by the production of glycerol hydrogenolysis ...

The PTK method only provides insights on the surface dynamics without specifying the involved surface intermediates. By complementing the results with spectroscopic techniques, a microkinetic model can be set up and verified offering insights into the dynamic formation and consumption of involved intermediates.

Preservative Ethanol From Stomach Contents Is a Reliable Proxy for Diet DNA Metabarcoding
We tested whether DNA metabarcoding of preservative ethanol can substitute bulk stomach contents for reconstructing diets. Using two ethanol DNA extraction methods (precipitation and drying), the resulting profiles showed minor differences relative to each other and to bulk contents in richness, composition, and read counts, mostly limited to low ...
