An overview of probiotics and prebiotics

Nursing Standard, 2007
This article reviews the origins and background of probiotics. Evidence for the potential mechanisms of probiotics and prebiotics, and their interactions with the gastrointestinal tract and the immune system are discussed. Evidence is examined for the use of probiotics to treat infantile diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease ...

Probiotics, Prebiotics, and Synbiotics

2008
According to the German definition, probiotics are defined viable microorganisms, sufficient amounts of which reach the intestine in an active state and thus exert positive health effects. Numerous probiotic microorganisms (e.g. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, L. reuteri, bifidobacteria and certain strains of L. casei or the L.

Prebiotics in obesity.

Panminerva medica, 2015
Obesity was probably rare in ancient times, with the current increase starting in the Industrial Revolution of the eighteenth century, and becoming much more widespread from about 1950, so concurrent with the increased consumption of carbohydrates from cereals in the Green Revolution.

Prebiotic Synthesis of Methionine

Science, 1972
Methionine has been shown to be a product of the action of a spark discharge on a simulated primitive earth atmosphere containing CH 4 , N 2 , NH 3 , H 2 O, and H 2 S or CH 3 SH.

The prebiotic chemistry of nucleotides

Origins of Life, 1984
Diiminosuccinonitrile (DISN), formed by the oxidation of diaminomaleonitrile (DAMN), has been investigated as a potential prebiotic phosphorylating agent. DISN effects the cyclization of 3'-adenosine monophosphate to adenosine 2', 3'-cyclic phosphate in up to 39% yield. The mechanism of this reaction was investigated.

The evolution of the prebiotic atmosphere

Origins of Life, 1984
One-dimensional radiative convective and photochemical models are used to estimate the vertical temperature structure and composition of the earth's prebiotic atmosphere. Greatly enhanced CO2 levels (100-1000 times present) are required to keep the mean surface temperature above freezing in the face of decreased solar luminosity during the earth's ...

Is cyanoacetylene prebiotic?

Origins of life and evolution of the biosphere : the journal of the International Society for the Study of the Origin of Life, 2002
Cyanoacetylene is an earlier intermediate in a proposed prebiotic synthesis of cytosine, while cyanoacetaldehyde is a later intermediate. There is no scientific basis for the claim that cyanoacetaldehyde is more plausibly prebiotic than cyanoacetylene in this context.

Prebiotic Peptides

2006
Based on modern geochemistry's view of the atmospheric and geological conditions on the primordial Earth ∼3.8–4 billion years ago, the most realistic scenario for the formation of amino acids and peptides in chemical evolution is discussed, including possible reasons for sequence preferences in early proteins and for biohomochirality.

Dietary Fiber and Prebiotics

2014
Dietary fiber and prebiotics exert a great impact on health-promoting food for mankind. Under this aspect a general overview is given about the bioavailability of carbohydrates and their influence on dietary fiber intake and about the developing of the prebiotic concept and specific functional foods. Moreover, the occurrence and chemical composition of
