Precession Electron Diffraction

2012
Precession electron diffraction (PED) is a key technique available to electron microscopists to elucidate the structure of inorganic crystals. A PED pattern is formed by the summation of a series of diffraction patterns whose incoming beam is tilted with respect to the optic axis.

Multipole Precession

American Journal of Physics, 1969
The motion of a nucleus with an intrinsic multiple moment, in particular an intrinsic hexadecapole (16 poles) moment in external electrostatic multiple (triple) field gradients, is studied from a classical point of view. It is shown that in the classical approximation the angular-momentum vector of a nucleus with an intrinsic hexadecapole moment may ...

Spin relaxation with bistable precession

Physical Review A, 1991
We study the effects of the reaction field on the spin relaxation. We find that they are not only responsible for a nonlinear friction process, as recently pointed out by several authors, but, in the case of sufficiently strong coupling, they also result in a bistable precession process.

Photometry of Precessing Torses

Journal of the Optical Society of America, 1966
The photometry of the flux received from a rotating, reflecting surface is developed. In cases where Lambert’s law of diffuse reflection holds, a self-conjugate photometric dyadic can be defined, which determines the received flux when the unit vector to the observer and the unit-vector to the source of collimated flux incident on the reflecting ...

Simulations of Precessing Jets

2003
We report on the results of a three-dimensional, relativistic, hydrodynamical simulation of a precessing jet through which a compact blob of matter is set to propagate. We conclude that the morphology of superluminal sources is the result of a complex combination of phase motions, viewing angle selection effects, and non-linear interactions between ...

Merons and Thomas Precession

Physical Review Letters, 1996
In a recent study of Thomas precession of electron spin in the context of the Dirac equation, Shankar and Mathur identify the non-Abelian Berry potential (arising from Kramers degeneracy) with the meron. We point out that there is a global mathematical subtlety which prevents such an identification.
