Narcolepsy and rapid eye movement sleep

open access: yesJournal of Sleep Research, Volume 34, Issue 2, April 2025.
Summary Since the first description of narcolepsy at the end of the 19th Century, great progress has been made. The disease is nowadays distinguished as narcolepsy type 1 and type 2. In the 1960s, the discovery of rapid eye movement sleep at sleep onset led to improved understanding of core sleep‐related disease symptoms of the disease (excessive ...

QCD String formation and the Casimir Energy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Three distinct scales are identified in the excitation spectrum of the gluon field around a static quark-antiquark pair as the color source separation R is varied. The spectrum, with string-like excitations on the largest length scales of 2-3 fm, provides clues in its rich fine structure for developing an effective bosonic string description.

Teen Unions and Intimate Partner Violence in South America

open access: yesPopulation and Development Review, EarlyView.
Abstract Precocious exits from adolescence via early union formation are often argued to represent a strong risk factor for intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization. However, causal evidence for this claim is scant. This study examines the impact of teen union formation (before age 18) on experiences of IPV in Brazil and Colombia, where early ...

Idiopathic Central Precocious Puberty Associated with 11 Mb De Novo Distal Deletion of the Chromosome 9 Short Arm

open access: yesCase Reports in Genetics, 2013
We report a girl with a de novo distal deletion of 9p affected by idiopathic central precocious puberty and intellectual disability. Genome-wide array-CGH revealed a terminal deletion of about 11 Mb, allowing to define her karyotype as 46; XX, del(9)(p23-

Relations between organisms and the environment in the ageing process [PDF]

open access: yesMARF2 2006, 2008
We have modified the sexual Penna model by introducing the fluctuating environment and fluctuations representing physiological functions of individuals. Additionally, we have introduced the mother care corresponding to the protection against the deleterious influence of the environment, the learning capacity of individuals corresponding to their ...

Imaging Assessment of the Pituitary Gland and Long‐Term Endocrinological Abnormalities in Pediatric Brain Cancer Survivors

open access: yesJournal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Volume 61, Issue 6, Page 2516-2522, June 2025.
Background Pediatric brain cancer survivors often experience hypothalamic–pituitary dysfunction due to cranial irradiation and chemotherapy. While hormone deficiencies have been studied, the changes in pituitary size and shape on long‐term MRI and their relationship to endocrine dysfunction remain under‐explored.

Bayesian Ordinal Quantile Regression with a Partially Collapsed Gibbs Sampler [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Unlike standard linear regression, quantile regression captures the relationship between covariates and the conditional response distribution as a whole, rather than only the relationship between covariates and the expected value of the conditional response.
