Bacterial predator-prey coevolution accelerates genome evolution and selects on virulence-associated prey defences

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
Generalist bacterial predators are likely to strongly shape many important ecological and evolutionary features of microbial communities, for example by altering the character and pace of molecular evolution, but investigations of such effects are scarce.

Label‐Free Sensing of Coronaviral Sequences via Kretschmann‐Configuration Reflectance Spectroscopic Ellipsometry: Sensitivity, Specificity, and Interfacial Effects

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Spectroscopic ellipsometry in the Kretschmann‐Raether configuration (KRSE) is employed to characterize a DNA‐functionalized platform for viral sequence recognition. By merging SE with surface plasmon resonance, KRSE outperforms conventional SE, achieving nanomolar targeting through resonance wavelength shifts (δλ) measurements. Its enhanced interfacial

Femtosecond‐Laser‐Fabricated 3D CYTOP Microfluidic Chips Enabling Super‐Resolution Live Imaging of Cell Behavior in Confined Microspaces

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Using two‐photon polymerization of SU‐8 together with mold processing allowed the creation of defect‐free, flexible 3D microfluidic structures with sub‐micrometer precision in CYTOP. The fabricated CYTOP microfluidic chips enabled super‐resolution imaging of cancer cells in the microchannels, clearly visualizing previously undetectable fine structural ...

Dynamics for a Ratio-Dependent Prey–Predator Model with Different Free Boundaries

open access: yesMathematics
In this paper, we study the dynamics of the ratio-dependent type prey–predator model with different free boundaries. The two free boundaries, determined by prey and predator, respectively, implying that they may intersect with each other as time evolves,

Environmental vs demographic variability in stochastic predator-prey models

open access: yes, 2013
In contrast to the neutral population cycles of the deterministic mean-field Lotka--Volterra rate equations, including spatial structure and stochastic noise in models for predator-prey interactions yields complex spatio-temporal structures associated ...

From Brittle to Flexible: Influence of Glucose‐Based Additives on Cellulose Nanocrystal Self‐Assembly in Suspension and Dried Photonic Films

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) self‐assemble in aqueous suspension into chiral nematic liquid crystals, resulting in structurally colored films upon drying. Here, the influence of sugar additives on CNC self‐assembly in suspension and in films are studied.

Dynamics and pattern formation in diffusive predator-prey models with predator-axis

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Differential Equations, 2020
We consider a three-species predator-prey system in which the predator has a stage structure and the prey moves to avoid the mature predator, which is called the predator-taxis.

Self-organizing patterns maintained by competing associations in a six-species predator-prey model

open access: yes, 2008
Formation and competition of associations are studied in a six-species ecological model where each species has two predators and two prey. Each site of a square lattice is occupied by an individual belonging to one of the six species.

Enhanced Trapping with an Optimized Graphene‐Based Bowtie Plasmonic Nanotweezer: Design, Analysis, and Bioanalytical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research, EarlyView.
A graphene‐based bowtie plasmonic nanotweezer is designed and optimized using particle swarm optimization and transfer matrix analysis. The structure achieves strong field confinement, delivering trapping forces up to 6 nN W−1 for 10 nm bioparticles with sixfold lower power requirements than conventional designs.

An individual, stochastic model of growth incorporating state-dependent risk and random foraging and climate

open access: yesMathematical Biosciences and Engineering, 2006
We model the effects of both stochastic and deterministic temperature variations on arthropod predator-prey systems. Specifically, we study the stochastic dynamics of arthropod predator-prey interactions under a varying temperature regime, and we develop
