Wafer‐Scale Integration of α‐quartz Thin Films toward Super High Frequency Piezoelectric bioNEMS for Chikungunya Virus Detection

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Epitaxial piezoelectric α‐quartz/Si BioNEMS sensors, made using soft chemistry, effectively detect the Chikungunya virus. They have a mass sensitivity of 205 pg Hz−1 in liquid and can detect the virus at a limit of 9 ng mL−1. This development enables high‐frequency mass devices for point‐of‐care testing in healthcare and other electronic applications ...

Wildlife responses to livestock guard dogs and domestic sheep on open range

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2021
Domestic sheep (Ovis aries) are an attractant to carnivores; however, sheep are often accompanied by humans and livestock guardian dogs (LGDs; Canis familiaris), which defend sheep from depredation.

Cloud Inspired White and Grey Plasmonic Metasurfaces for Camouflaged Thermal Management

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by clouds' role in Earth's thermal management, this work presents disordered plasmonic metasurfaces that mimic their radiative effects. The white metasurface enhances backscattering, acting as a cooling layer with camouflage properties.

UNSUCCESSFUL PREDATION AND LEARNING OF PREDATOR CUES BY CRAYFISH [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Crustacean Biology, 2003
Abstract The effect of latent inhibition on learning about cues related to increased predation risk was studied in a native crayfish, Orconectes virilis, and in an invasive species, Orconectes rusticus. Individuals of both species either were exposed or not exposed to the conditioned stimulus (potential “predator” odor = goldfish odor) prior to ...

Nesidiocoris tenuis (Reuter) (Heteroptera: Miridae), a predatory species of the tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) in Iran

open access: yesJournal of Plant Protection Research, 2015
The tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), is a major worldwide pest of tomato crops, both in the greenhouse and in open field cultivations. Since this pest’s new introduction in Iran, it has caused extensive damage.

Intraguild predation and competition impacts on a subordinate predator [PDF]

open access: yesOecologia, 2016
Intraguild (IG) predation and interspecific competition may affect the settlement and success of species in their habitats. Using data on forest-dwelling hawks from Finland, we addressed the impact of an IG predator, the northern goshawk Accipiter gentilis (goshawk), on the breeding of an IG prey, the common buzzard Buteo buteo.

Preferential Membrane Remodeling on Curved Biointerfaces Induced by Conjugated Oligoelectrolyte

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
This study explores how membrane shape influences the interaction of conjugated oligoelectrolytes (COEs) with lipid bilayers. Using a curved biointerface composed of nanobar arrays and supported lipid bilayers, it is revealed that COE intercalation preferentially remodels curved regions, forming distinct structures. These findings highlight the role of

Herbivore identity mediates the strength of trophic cascades on individual plants

open access: yesEcosphere, 2013
The strength of top‐down indirect effects of carnivores on plants (trophic cascades) varies greatly and may depend on the identity of the intermediate (herbivore) species.

Ecology of Vespidae (Hymenoptera)Predators in Coffea arabica Plantations

open access: yesSociobiology, 2014
Social Vespidae exhibit control of Leucoptera coffeella (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae) in Brazil. The objective was to determine the ideal unit for sampling of predaceous Vespidae in coffee crops in the vegetative and reproductive phases.
