Is landscape of fear of macroinvertebrate communities a major determinant of mesopredator and prey activity?

open access: yesKnowledge and Management of Aquatic Ecosystems, 2020
Macroinvertebrate foragers play an important role on the trophic structures of freshwater environments, and multiple trophic levels occur among macroinvertebrate communities providing very interesting scenarios for testing scientific hypotheses.

Predator control should not be a shot in the dark

open access: yes, 2016
Livestock owners traditionally use various non-lethal and lethal methods to protect their domestic animals from wild predators. However, many of these methods are implemented without first considering experimental evidence of their effectiveness in ...

Predator interactions, mesopredator release and biodiversity conservation.

open access: yesEcology Letters, 2009
There is growing recognition of the important roles played by predators in regulating ecosystems and sustaining biodiversity. Much attention has focused on the consequences of predator-regulation of herbivore populations, and associated trophic cascades.

Geographic variation in walking activity in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
This study examined whether there is geographic variation in field populations, focusing on the moving activity in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. Results showed significant differences in moving activity among field populations but no correlation with latitude or meteorological factors.

A novel candidate species of Anaplasma that infects avian erythrocytes

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2018
Background Anaplasma spp. are Gram-negative obligate intracellular bacteria transmitted by ticks. Even though numerous studies have detected DNA from Anaplasma spp.

A piecewise deterministic model for a prey-predator community [PDF]

open access: yesAnn. Appl. Probab., Volume 26, Number 6 (2016), 3491-3530, 2015
We are interested in prey-predator communities where the predator population evolves much faster than the prey's (e.g. insect-tree communities). We introduce a piecewise deterministic model for these prey-predator communities that arises as a limit of a microscopic model when the number of predators goes to infinity.

Impacts of Device Geometry and Layout on Temperature Profile during Large‐Area Photonic Curing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The study investigates how gate geometry affects peak curing temperature during photonic curing of solution‐processed indium zinc oxide thin‐film transistors. Using 3D simulations and experimental validation, it reveals that larger gate areas and smaller aspect ratios increase curing temperature and thus improve transistor performance. Findings provide

Predator-Free New Zealand: Conservation Country

open access: yesBioScience, 2015
Eradications of invasive species from over 1000 small islands around the world have created conservation arks, but to truly address the threat of invasive species to islands, eradications must be scaled by orders of magnitude.

Sonochemical Functionalization of Glass

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A new method for functionalizing glass using ultrasonication of aryl diazonium salts. Aryl radicals generated by ultrasounds react with glass, forming a stable, covalently bonded organic film. The functionalized glass adheres microorganisms such as microalgae, fungi, and bacteria, suggesting potential applications in enzyme production, filtration ...
