The 20-million-year old lair of an ambush-predatory worm preserved in northeast Taiwan

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
The feeding behavior of the giant ambush-predator “Bobbit worm” (Eunice aphroditois) is spectacular. They hide in their burrows until they explode upwards grabbing unsuspecting prey with a snap of their powerful jaws.

Bioinspired Mechanisms and Actuation of Soft Robotic Crawlers

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Researchers have been developing soft materials and robotic crawlers inspired by soft‐bodied animals to mimic effective crawling in complex environments. This review explores the state‐of‐the‐art in soft crawlers, highlighting the interaction between materials, crawling mechanisms, actuation, and applications. The review concludes by providing insights

How does the increase in eating difficulties according to the Development and Well‐Being Assessment screening items relate to the population prevalence of eating disorders? An analysis of the 2017 Mental Health in Children and Young People survey

open access: yesInternational Journal of Eating Disorders, Volume 55, Issue 12, Page 1777-1787, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Objective We examine the test accuracy of the Development and Well‐Being Assessment (DAWBA) eating disorder screening items to explore whether the increased eating difficulties detected in the English National Mental Health of Children and Young People (MHCYP) Surveys 2021 reflect an increased population prevalence.

Predatory Medicine: Exploring and Measuring the Vulnerability of Medical AI to Predatory Science [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Medical Artificial Intelligence (MedAI) for diagnosis, treatment options, and drug development represents the new age of healthcare. The security, integrity, and credibility of MedAI tools are paramount issues because human lives are at stake. MedAI solutions are often heavily dependent on scientific medical research literature as a primary data source

Boon and Bane of Local Solid State Chemistry on the Performance of LSM‐Based Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, EarlyView.
Cation diffusion causes an increase in the catalytically active MIEC region in solid oxide cells. Simultaneously, it leads to the additional formation and growth of secondary structures in the electrolyte, which reduces the oxygen diffusion. Abstract High‐temperature solid oxide cells are highly efficient energy converters.

Substrate size modifies stream grazer–biofilm interactions in the presence of invertivorous fish

open access: yesEcology, Volume 103, Issue 12, December 2022., 2022
Abstract When herbivore abundance is controlled by predators there may be an indirect positive effect on primary producers due to reduced grazing pressure, but the potential of predation refuges to modify such trophic cascades has rarely been studied.

The Potential of Self-Regulation for Front-Running Prevention on DEXes [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
The transaction ordering dependency of the smart contracts building decentralized exchanges (DEXes) allow for predatory trading strategies. In particular, front-running attacks present a constant risk for traders on DEXes. Whereas legal regulation outlaws most front-running practices in traditional finance, such measures are ineffective in preventing ...

The identification of predatory behavior in the presence of uncertainty

open access: yesInternational Journal of Industrial Organization, 1985
Abstract Out of the ongoing debate on what constitutes predatory behavior has surfaced the idea that it must entail a sacrifice of profits. The notion is that behavior which sacrifices profits must have an ulterior motive, namely an attempt to induce exit by rivals.

Waterborne agrichemicals compromise the anti-predatory behavior of zebrafish

open access: yesEnvironmental Science and Pollution Research, 2020
Due to human activities, there is an increasing presence of agrochemicals residues in water bodies, which could be attributed to an increased use of these chemicals, incorrect disposal of packaging materials, and crop leaching. The effects of these residues on prey-predator relationship of aquatic animals are poorly known.

Trichobothrial mediation of an aquatic escape response: Directional jumps by the fishing spider, Dolomedes triton, foil frog attacks

open access: yesJournal of Insect Science, 2003
Fishing spiders (Pisauridae) frequent the surfaces of ponds and streams and thereby expose themselves to predation by a variety of aquatic and semi-aquatic vertebrates. To assess the possibility that the impressive jumps of fishing spiders from the water
