When Predictions Don't Predict

Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 1991
EDITORIAL COMMENT: We accepted this paper to remind readers that the rules of clinical common sense as well as the results of statistical calculations are needed to judge published results of clinical trials. Statistical rules for design of a trial should be followed, and advice of a statistician sought before rather than after a study begins.

Predictability and Prediction

Journal of the Royal Statistical Society. Series A (Statistics in Society), 1993
A result can be regarded as routinely predictable when it has recurred consistently under a known range of different conditions. This depends on the previous analysis of many sets of data, drawn from different populations. There is no such basis of extensive experience when a prediction is derived from the analysis of only a single set of data.

MODEL IMPERFECTION AND PREDICTING PREDICTABILITY

International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 2013
It has been argued that Lyapunov exponents as a measure of predictability are of limited value because they only provide a global average. Characterizing an attractor by a distribution of times for initial uncertainties to increase by a factor of q has been suggested as a more useful alternative.

Predicting Macrosomia

Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine, 2008
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prediction of fetal macrosomia based on ultrasound estimates of fetal weight and amniotic fluid volume combined with clinical risk factors.A retrospective cohort study of women undergoing indicated obstetric ultrasound examinations within 7 days of delivery was conducted.A total of 3115 women gave birth ...

Genetic Prediction

Hastings Center Report, 2015
AbstractThe fundamental reason that the genetics of behavior has remained so controversial for so long is that the layer of theory between data and their interpretation is thicker and more opaque than in more established areas of science. The finding that variations in tiny snippets of DNA have small but detectable relations to variation in behavior ...

Predicting conception

Human Fertility, 2002
Infertility is relative. Research into effective treatment must focus on couples with single, identifiable causes for their infertility, and must take into account the effect of chance and time on eventual success. Women with ovulatory infertility, who have no other subfertility factors, can expect normal conception rates when ovulation is restored ...

Predictive coding

WIREs Cognitive Science, 2011
AbstractPredictive coding is a unifying framework for understanding redundancy reduction and efficient coding in the nervous system. By transmitting only the unpredicted portions of an incoming sensory signal, predictive coding allows the nervous system to reduce redundancy and make full use of the limited dynamic range of neurons.
