Visual function and cortical organization in carriers of blue cone monochromacy. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
Carriers of blue cone monochromacy have fewer cone photoreceptors than normal. Here we examine how this disruption at the level of the retina affects visual function and cortical organization in these individuals.

Effects of preferred retinal locus placement on text navigation and development of advantageous trained retinal locus

open access: yesThe Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development, 2006
Sixty readers were evaluated for visual function and text-navigation ability. The visual field and preferred retinal locus (PRL) were measured with a scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO). We found significant differences in text-navigation ability based on scotoma and PRL placement.

Image Stabilization in Central Vision Loss: The Horizontal Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex

open access: yesVision, 2018
For patients with central vision loss and controls with normal vision, we examined the horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) in complete darkness and in the light when enhanced by vision (VVOR).

Does Vertical Reading Help People with Macular Degeneration: An Exploratory Study. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Individuals with macular degeneration often develop a Preferred Retinal Locus (PRL) used in place of the impaired fovea. It is known that many people adopt a PRL left of the scotoma, which is likely to affect reading by occluding text to the right of ...

Adult limbal neurosphere cells: a potential autologous cell resource for retinal cell generation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The Corneal limbus is a readily accessible region at the front of the eye, separating the cornea and sclera. Neural colonies (neurospheres) can be generated from adult corneal limbus in vitro.

Technical factors influencing cone packing density estimates in adaptive optics flood illuminated retinal images. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of various technical factors on the variation of cone packing density estimates in adaptive optics flood illuminated retinal images.

Fixation Location and Stability in Best Vitelliform Macular Dystrophy

open access: yesOphthalmology Science, 2023
Purpose: To analyze fixation location and stability in best vitelliform macular dystrophy (BVMD) and test their association with best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA). Design: Observational, cross-sectional study.

Evidence for alterations in fixational eye movements in glaucoma

open access: yesBMC Ophthalmology, 2018
Background Fixation changes in glaucoma are generally overlooked, as they are not strikingly evident as in macular diseases. Fundus perimetry might give additional insights into this aspect, along with traditional perimetric measures.

Stabilization of the retinal vascular network by reciprocal feedback between blood vessels and astrocytes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Development of the retinal vasculature is controlled by a hierarchy of interactions among retinal neurons, astrocytes and blood vessels. Retinal neurons release platelet-derived growth factor (PDGFA) to stimulate proliferation of astrocytes, which in ...
