Characterization Preliminary Breakdown in the Measured Lightning Electric Fields on Malaysia Data [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Mechanics and Materials, 2015
This paper presents a characteristic of lightning electric fields. The lightning electric fields were captured by two parallel plats sensor and the characterization for preliminary breakdown pulse (PBP) was studied. A total of 207 data were recorded and 10 data are selected and been utilized in this paper accordingly.

Horizontal lightning propagation, preliminary breakdown, and electric potential in New Mexico thunderstorms [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2008
Characteristics of lightning flashes in three storms are compared to simultaneous electric field (E) measurements at various altitudes to examine three hypotheses. The first is the idea that horizontal lightning branches propagate at altitudes near potential extrema (or wells).

Refinement of the EC stray radiation estimates for ITER [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2023
The ITER ECRH&CD system is composed by 24 gyrotrons at 170 GHz that will deliver 20 MW at the plasma. Up to 6.7 MW will be injected in the empty vacuum vessel at the beginning of each plasma discharge to provide the gas breakdown.

Significant Lightning Stroke Count in Negative Ground Flashes Featuring the Relationship of Preliminary Breakdown and The First Return Stroke

open access: yesInternational Journal of Integrated Engineering, 2023
The separation duration of Preliminary Breakdown (PB) to the First Return Stroke (PB-RS duration) and the ratio between the highest amplitude pulse of negative CG flashesand the first Return Stroke pulse (PB/RS ratio) were successfully used as a tool by ...

A 3D Interferometer-Type Lightning Mapping Array for Observation of Winter Lightning in Japan

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2023
We have developed and deployed a 3D Interferometer-type Lightning Mapping Array (InLMA) for observing winter lightning in Japan. InLMA consists of three broadband interferometers installed at three stations with a distance from 3 to 5 km.

Karakteristik Medan Listrik-Dekat Petir Positive Cloud to Ground

open access: yesElektron, 2023
This study was conducted on 19 electric field data near positive lightning cloud to ground (+CG). The electric field change of +CG lightning consist of preliminary breakdown (PB) and return stroke (RS).

Comparing the Wave Characteristics of Breakdown Pulses of the Lightning Waveforms in the Himalayan Region

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, 2021
We have analyzed the breakdown pulse train with or without the main event in this paper. Among the selected 81 flashes, 36 flashes are starting positively, and 45 are starting negatively.

Characterization of Preliminary Breakdown Pulse Trains in Negative Cloud-To-Ground Flashes Recorded during A Rainy Season in The Bogota Savannah, Colombia

open access: yesTecnoLógicas, 2022
Lightning-generated electric field measurement is used to characterize cloud-to-ground (CG) flashes. Prior to the first return stroke (FRS), these signals sometimes exhibit a pulse train, known as preliminary breakdown pulses (PBP), whose study provides ...

A negative cloud-to-ground lightning flash initiating at a high altitude and starting without classic preliminary breakdown pulses

open access: yes, 2020
A special negative cloud-to-ground (-CG) flash imaged by a low frequency lightning mapping system is reported in this paper. This flash initiated at a high altitude of about 11 km.

Design of a Compact 1-MV-Class Radial Closing Switch for Tesla Type Generator

open access: yesEnergies, 2022
The paper presents the development of a megavolt-class SF6-insulated radial switch. The switch is used as a crowbar in a MV Tesla-type generator to produce pulsed electric fields in very large volumes, for proof-of-concept experimentation of a novel non ...
