ZW4864‐mediated inhibition of the β‐catenin/BCL9/BCL9L complex reveals therapeutic potential in bladder cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
BCL9 and BCL9L drive bladder cancer progression by enhancing β‐catenin signaling, promoting proliferation, migration, invasion, and organoid growth. Genetic depletion of BCL9(L) suppresses malignant phenotypes, while pharmacological disruption of the β‐catenin/BCL9(L) complex with ZW4864 inhibits canonical Wnt signaling and tumor‐associated cellular ...

Strasbourg’s Consideration of Article 267 TFEU and the ECtHR as a Shadow Constitutional Court of the European Union

open access: yesGerman Law Journal
In this Article I argue that the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) exercises an under-acknowledged power to shape the constitutional norms of the EU’s legal order—a power that extends beyond that court’s role in influencing the interpretation of ...

‘“Grow Up!”: Rethinking the Preliminary Reference Procedure from the Perspective of Maturity’

open access: yesLSE Law Review, 2021
The clash between the German Constitutional Court and the CJEU in May 2020 over economic policy highlights the growing tension between the EU and the courts of last instance in Member States. This article argues that such tensions demand a legal order which respects national judicial hierarchies, and thereby becoming mature.

Circulating microRNA signatures of cachexia and cancer in Canis familiaris as a comparative oncology model for human disease

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Circulating microRNAs as biomarkers of cachexia and sex‐specific cancer in senior dogs. In 25 client‐owned dogs, four circulating miRNAs (miR‐15a, miR‐15b, miR‐16, miR‐140) were downregulated in cachexia, with miR‐16 the strongest individual biomarker (AUC = 0.899).

Epigenetic silencing of the liver‐specific lncRNA LUNAR promotes liver cancer progression via NOTCH activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
LUNAR is a liver‐specific long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) that is highly expressed in normal liver but becomes epigenetically silenced in hepatocellular carcinoma through promoter hypermethylation. Loss of LUNAR is associated with NOTCH activation, epithelial–mesenchymal transition, and metastasis, whereas restoring LUNAR restrains metastatic progression ...

PRELIMINARY REFERENCE PROCEDURE AND THE SCOPE OF JUDICIAL REVIEW OF THE EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS

open access: yesEU AND COMPARATIVE LAW ISSUES AND CHALLENGES SERIES, 2019
The purpose of this paper is to examine the scope of the ECtHR’s review of preliminary reference procedure provided for in Article 267 TFEU, insofar as it concerns the right to a fair trial and other procedural safeguards read into substantive rights of the ECHR. In Ullens de Schooten and Rezabek v.

Cancer cell‐intrinsic type 1 interferon: production, signaling, and outcomes within sex‐biased, female malignancies

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The cell‐autonomous roles of interferon type 1 vary based on duration and intensity. While acute, robust signaling results in cancer cell cytotoxic effects, sustained, low‐level signaling is associated with tumor‐promoting effects. This review summarizes current research of IFN‐1 in cancer and within the clinical setting, with an emphasis on female ...

Somatostatin receptor 4 (SSTR4) is a tumor suppressor in cutaneous and head & neck squamous cell carcinomas

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study identifies somatostatin receptor 4 (Sstr4) as a critical tumor suppressor against skin and head/neck cancers (HNSCC, cSCC, and BCC). The loss of Sstr4 removes a check on cell growth, causing hyperactivation of the MAPK‐ERK signaling pathway (↑).
