Effects of prescribed fire on soil properties in a pine rockland ecosystem

open access: yesAgricultural & Environmental Letters, 2020
We investigated the impact of a single prescribed fire on soil properties of a pine rockland (PR) ecosystem (South Florida, USA) that had never been burned since establishment in 1978. Soil samples were collected before the prescribed fire (T0) and 1 wk (

Evaluation of Prescribed Fires from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) Imagery and Machine Learning Algorithms

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2020
Prescribed fires have been applied in many countries as a useful management tool to prevent large forest fires. Knowledge on burn severity is of great interest for predicting post-fire evolution in such burned areas and, therefore, for evaluating the ...

Performance of Burn-Severity Metrics and Classification in Oak Woodlands and Grasslands

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2015
Burn severity metrics and classification have yet to be tested for many eastern U.S. deciduous vegetation types, but, if suitable, would be valuable for documenting and monitoring landscape-scale restoration projects that employ prescribed fire ...

Design of Experiments‐Based Optimization of Recovered Carbon Black–Reinforced Isobutylene–Isoprene Rubber in Comparison With Conventional Carbon Black Systems

open access: yesJournal of Applied Polymer Science, EarlyView.
Optimized potential of rCB via DOE: recovered carbon black from end‐of‐life tires was assessed as a full substitute for conventional carbon black in IIR composites. DOE and response surface methodology optimized rCB loading, plasticizer, and sulfur contents. Hardness showed linear trends, while rupture energy was nonlinear.

Bugs and burns: Effects of fire on ponderosa pine bark beetle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Fire-damaged trees that otherwise would have survived can be killed by bark beetles (McCullough and others 1998, McHugh and others 2003). Wallin and others (2008) found that fire weakens a tree’s defense against bark beetles.

Coherence‐Gated Wrapped‐Phase InSAR With Matrix‐Based Uncertainty Diagnostics for Burial‐Mound Hotspot Ranking (Sicily, Italy)

open access: yesArchaeological Prospection, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Burial mounds are key elements of Mediterranean funerary landscapes, but in intensively cultivated coastal plains their low‐relief expression is easily obscured by ploughing, levelling and rapidly changing surface conditions, making single‐date observations unreliable.

Effects of Prescribed Fire on Mammoth Cave National Park’s Oak-Hickory Vegetation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Mammoth Cave National Park contains a spectacular suite of plant communities; many of which are dependent on wildland fire as a disturbance process for their preservation. Over a third of the park is dominated by oak-hickory forests and woodlands.

Measuring the Impact: Magnetic Resonance Imaging Response of Sacroiliac Joints to Tumor Necrosis Factor Inhibitors in Youth With Axial Disease

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, EarlyView.
Objective To evaluate the timeline for resolution of sacroiliac joint (SIJ) inflammation, changes in structural lesions, and their correlation with patient‐reported outcomes (PROs) in youth with axial juvenile spondyloarthritis (axJSpA) initiating tumor necrosis factor inhibitor (TNFi).
