Optimized potential of rCB via DOE: recovered carbon black from end‐of‐life tires was assessed as a full substitute for conventional carbon black in IIR composites. DOE and response surface methodology optimized rCB loading, plasticizer, and sulfur contents. Hardness showed linear trends, while rupture energy was nonlinear.

Bugs and burns: Effects of fire on ponderosa pine bark beetle [PDF]
Fire-damaged trees that otherwise would have survived can be killed by bark beetles (McCullough and others 1998, McHugh and others 2003). Wallin and others (2008) found that fire weakens a tree’s defense against bark beetles.

Effects of Prescribed Fire on Mammoth Cave National Park’s Oak-Hickory Vegetation [PDF]
Mammoth Cave National Park contains a spectacular suite of plant communities; many of which are dependent on wildland fire as a disturbance process for their preservation. Over a third of the park is dominated by oak-hickory forests and woodlands.
