Prescribed Burning: Requiem or Renaissance?
Journal of Forestry, 1984Various perceptions of prescribed burning of woodlands are described. Most states prohibit setting fire to woodlands except under specific circumstances. Requirements for authorization to burn vary from state to state. The extent of restriction appears to be inversely proportional to amount of fire use, with little or not burning done in states having ...

Experimental Prescribed Burn In Radiata Pine
Australian Forestry, 1968SUMMARY A prescribed burn of low intensity was carried out in a 23-year-old plantation of radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don). The burn reduced the fine fuel from 3.6 to 2.6 tons per acre, and it was a satisfactory hazard-reduction measure. Infiltration rates were determined before and after the fire by applying artificial rainfall, at the rate of 80 ...

Prescribed burning in southwestern Australian forests
Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, 2013Prescribed burning is an important but often controversial fire‐management tool in fire‐prone regions of the world. Here, we explore the complex challenges of prescribing fire for multiple objectives in the eucalypt forests of southwestern Australia, which could be regarded as a model for temperate landscapes elsewhere. Prescribed fire has been used in

Prescribed Burn at Pine Bluff Arsenal
2003Abstract : Fire is an important ecological process in the southern United States. Many animal and plant species evolved in the presence of fire, and many vegetation types thrive best in the presence of fire. Fire-dependent biota are declining because of fire suppression and landscape-scale changes.

A Gardener's Approach : Prescribed Burn Edition
2021The Okanagan-Similkameen is a landscape of complex and often conflicting cultural identities and practices. Historically, the introduction of one group of people has meant the displacement of another. First pitched in 2002 and now close to realization, the arrival of a National Park Reserve is contested for being yet another erasure of the locals ...

How Prescribed Burning Affects Wildfire Occurrence
Journal of Forestry, 1963Abstract In 1959, an attempt was made to evaluate the effectiveness of prescribed fires in reducing the number, size, and intensity of wildfires in north Florida and south Georgia. Data were collected from 380 fires on 954,000 acres for a 4-year period, 1955 to 1958, a span that included twobad fire years and two relatively easy fire ...

Prescribed Burning as a Soil Amelioration Measure
2000In Finland, attention first turned to the possibilities of using prescribed burning to promote forest regeneration at the end of the last century after reports of rather satisfactory stand development in areas subjected to slash-and-burn agriculture and forest fires (Heikinheimo 1915).

Effects of Prescribed Burning on Deer Browse
The Journal of Wildlife Management, 1970The effects of prescribed burs on the quantity and quality of deer (Odocoileus virginianus) browse were studied during March, 1966, 1967, and 1968, on the Catoosa Wildlife Management Area, Tennessee. The 1968 burn contained slightly less available browse than the unburned site.
