Arctic High Resolution Sea‐Ice Forecast System on a Heterogeneous Many‐Core Computing Platform

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, Volume 18, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract This study develops an ensemble forecast system for Arctic sea ice with a horizontal resolution of ∼2 km to resolve linear kinematic features (LKFs). The system is designed to run operationally on the Sunway computing architecture, which employs many‐core processors with a distinct programming logic.

Sample size requirements to evaluate policies in addiction research using interrupted time series analysis (ITS): Tools and guidance

open access: yesAddiction, Volume 121, Issue 3, Page 695-712, March 2026.
Abstract Formal power calculations are rarely presented in interrupted time‐series (ITS) studies due to their technical complexity, creating a significant gap in methodological rigor. This paper aimed to make power and sample size determination more accessible for researchers, particularly in the field of addiction, by providing a suite of practical ...

A Scale‐Invariant Learning Model for Distributed Practice Effects

open access: yesCognitive Science, Volume 50, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract Despite their potential to significantly improve the durability of learning and their proven predictive power on many occasions, theories of distributed practice have not yet been widely adopted by educators. The reluctance may be attributed to the enormous strain they impose on learners or the fragmented nature of the evidence, as well as the

Applying Extreme Value Theory to a Century of Ammonium Nitrate Disasters: Persistent Safety Risks in Chemical Supply Chains

open access: yesRisk Analysis, Volume 46, Issue 3, March 2026.
ABSTRACT We have analyzed 39 major ammonium nitrate (AN) accidents (1916–2022) that reveal systemic catastrophic risks have not diminished over the past century. This challenges the prevailing narrative of improved process safety of AN on account of iterative guidelines and technology advances.
